This tool is useful for creating fur geometry and setting up a network to render fur with the Mantra Fur Procedural. Houdini fur is made of hundreds or millions of curves generated on a surface. The Fur surface node generates the fur curves as scene geometry. The Fur Procedural shader generates the fur at render time instead of in the scene. You will usually use the fur surface node for visualization (with lower density) and only render fur with the fur procedural shader.
This tool allows you to add fur to geometry and creates a Textured Hair material which gives a tubular look to the non-dimensional curves. Once you add fur, use the
Comb Fur tool and some of the paint tools to style the fur. Finally, use the
Add Dynamics tool to make the fur reaction the character’s motion and external forces.
By default the Display Density is 5% of the actual fur density. This value is low to speed up the display.
This tool creates fur without guides. You only need to use guides if you are adding dynamics. To enable guide hairs, turn on the Use Guides checkbox on the Guide subtab of the Hairs tab on the fur object. Clicking the
Add Dynamics tool on the shelf will automatically turn on this checkbox.
Using Add Fur
-
Click the
Add Fur tool on the Fur tab. -
Select the objects to which you want to add fur and press Enter to confirm your selection.
You can specify the length, number of segments, and density in the parameter editor.
For specific parameter help see the
Fur node help.
It is useful to append a
Rest SOP after your geometry node so that the fur will animate properly. In this example, you would append the Rest SOP after the Grid SOP in the original geometry object.
Once you add fur to your object, you may want to
Comb Fur it or style it using the paint tools on the shelf.
