Maya | Copy Asset

unity_package_d.png The Copy asset lets you use the Houdini Engine to scatter objects over a surface. Using any input geometry from Maya, you can determine how many pieces will be copied and how they should be distributed. In this lesson, you will learn how to use the existing copy tool and how to create your own Copy asset using Houdini or Houdini Apprentice.

Maya | New Production Build

There is a new Production Build [13.0.314] for Houdini 13 which includes an updated Maya plug-in. Many thanks to those artists who have participated on our SideFX Labs forum and/or submitted bugs. There have been a number of key features added and issues addressed. Please continue to put the plug-in through its paces and let us know when your assets are, or are not, working. This new build will give you access to the Maya plug-in for 30 days from today.

What's New:

  • UVs and normals from Maya input mesh are now passed to Engine as vertex attributCurve output is now supported in the Houdini Engine, and in implemented in the Maya plugin.
  • Fixed closed curve inputs.
  • Added support for using particle as input in the Maya plug-in.
  • When outputting particles to Maya, we output the certain attributes that Maya expects. Otherwise, Maya could crash under some operations. Also add support for outputting all point attributes from the asset to particle attributes, instead of only outputting the hardcoded attributes.
  • The recent asset list in the Maya plug-in menu will now record the asset name as well. This means that selecting an entry from the recent list will load a specific asset from a specific asset library.

This new build will give you access to the Maya plug-in for 30 days from today.

What's New:

  • Added support for button parameters in Maya's attribute editor.
  • UVs and normals from Maya input mesh are now passed to Engine as vertex attributes.
  • Set transformation for input curve.
  • Fix transformation order for input mesh.
  • Added back the "Reload Asset" menu. It's not quite ideal, but it should work until we have a better reload mechanism.
  • Multiparm is working in Maya again.

Maya | Create your Own Assets
November 28, 2013

In this lesson, you will learn how to create an asset in Houdini or Houdini Apprentice then load that asset into Maya using the Houdini Engine. You will learn how to set up parameters on the asset for use in Maya and how to refresh the interface in Maya using a mel script. This lesson can be completed using the free Houdini Apprentice edition which can also be used to install the Houdini Engine for Maya plug-in.

 

Maya | Fracture Asset

unity_package_d.png The Fracture asset shows how you can use the Houdini Engine to break up geometry from inside Maya. Using any input geometry from Maya, you can set parameters for how much fracturing occurs and even add rigid body dynamics to your object.

 

Volumes Asset

The Houdini Engine Plug-in lets you open up Houdini Digital Assets into Maya. The following tutorial video shows you how to use a Volumes asset from Orbolt to turn your Maya objects into cloud-like volumes. Note that this asset only works in Maya 2014 which supports volumes.:

Maya Plug-in QuickStart

faq.png Side Effects Software is proud to announce the immediate release of experimental Houdini Engine plug-ins for public preview. These plug-ins allow for deep integration of Houdini technology into Autodesk Maya and will be available freely to CG artists during the experimental testing period.

To access the Houdini Engine, artists can download the latest production build of Houdini or the FREE Houdini Apprentice Learning Edition and install the experimental plug-ins along with the Houdini interactive software. Houdini Digital Assets created in either Houdini or Apprentice can then be loaded into Maya and Unity using the Houdini Engine plug-ins. A growing library of Digital Assets for use in both Maya and Unity will be available at the Orbolt Smart 3D Asset Store

The following video tutorial outlines the steps needed to install the plug-in using the Houdini or Houdini Apprentice installers. Please note that the Maya plug-in is only available on Linux and 64-bit Windows. A Mac OSX version will be available at a later date.:
