The news that Softimage will be acquired by Autodesk marks the end of an era. The past 20 years, developing software alongside Softimage has been a dynamic time, full of innovation and healthy competition. Starting with character animation in 1988, Softimage has advanced the industry in many areas. I would personally like to thank my contemporaries for their past contributions to the CG community.

Since this news was first announced, discussion on the forums has been lively and has evoked a wide range of emotions. In some of the posts, the role of Houdini and Side Effects is being discussed and I wanted to address some of the speculation about who we are and where we are going.

A Commitment to Innovation

ImageAs an independent company, our mission today remains the same as it has been for the last 20 years – a focus on innovation and delivering the best tools for CG artists working in production. Our independence allows us to shape our own destiny and we plan to continue working this way.

I am very proud of Side Effects’ track record and enjoy putting new and exciting technologies into the hands of artists. The developers at Side Effects have always embodied a spirit of innovation and enjoy helping studios meet the day-to-day demands of CG production. Houdini’s procedural node-based workflow continues to play an important role in the CG industry, and each and every day I am impressed to see what Houdini developers accomplish.

Given the recent news, I can’t help but think about our own past innovations including a product called ICE (Interactive Compositing Environment) which we released in 1992, many years before XSI users first started building networks with nodes.

Houdini's Growing Community

Today, interest in Houdini is growing due in part to fully integrated dynamics, a much more artist-friendly UI and more affordable prices. Equally important is how well Houdini works with other software, with support for the FBX interchange format and integrated Python scripting. For years, 3D animators, visual effects artists and technical directors have turned to Houdini to tackle a wide range of production challenges. It is great to see how the community has grown over the last few years to include so many smaller Boutique studios and independent artists.

Our commitment to our customers is exemplified in our personal approach to technical support. Our support team is friendly and willing to share their production know-how. We often work with customers, even new customers, to prototype solutions for upcoming shots. Most importantly, we release daily builds of Houdini which means that you don’t have to wait until the next dot release to see your issues addressed.

Win a Copy of Houdini Master!

We encourage artists who are looking for a less corporate way of doing business to try out Houdini Apprentice which gives you virtually full access to Houdini Master for personal use. As an added incentive, anyone who tries out Houdini and then sends me their first impressions [250-300 words] before Midnight EST on November 30th, 2008 at will be entered in a draw to win a copy of Houdini Master and a one year Annual Upgrade Plan valued at over $10,000 USD. To enter, send 250-300 words describing your experience and include a screen grab or scene file showing your work-in-progress to verify that you have been trying out Houdini. The screen grab is for verification purposes only and will have no effect on the outcome of the draw.

The one good thing about the end of an era is that a new one begins. At Side Effects we are looking forward the exciting road ahead and welcome you to join us on the journey.

Great message!I am really looking forward to the feature of SESI!!

Congratulations Kim, on SESI's ultimate success in a Darwinian market of predation and survival. Incidentally, we had an XSI Ice demo here at EA (I'm in Vancouver now). I asked the demo guy if he was familiar with Houdini, and he allowed as he was. I mentioned the similarities between the Houdini workflow, and their new Ice product, and asked for a description of the features of Ice which make it distinct from Houdini. He couldn't come up with even one. He did smile, though. Anyway - I wish we were using Houdini here. It's still far and away the most complete, elegant, and functional solution for me. I've used them all, unfortunately.

i think you shouldnt compare Houdini to max xsi or maya, houdini is way too hard, expressions and such makes it really hard to learn, Caleb you say you used them all, and i guess you saw how fast interactive and good UI those software have, Houidini to me is just a bright star that cant be reacehd by average and normal people because its too hard and really few tutorials and materials online.

I still think it is the most powerfull software around.

I have been struggling with Houdini for two months. I believe I can benefit from the great flexibility and power of Houdini, and anxous to reach the level where I can express my Idea freely with Houdini. In the new era, I hope Houdini will come near me and help me create my imagination.

Although Houdini is difficult to learn at first (almost like learning Blender, which I have been using since 2001), once you get a hang of the architecture, Houdini rocks.

I am in the fourth month of learning and am very comfortable with the procedural workflow.

Keep up the good work SideFX.

Cheers from India,

Just what the doctor ordered kim :)
We get your drive and are very happy to know sidefx is as independent as it always was.
Thanks for your feedback offer too.
I know MANY artists/studios in India are looking at Houdini very very seriously.
May sidefx Have a Brialliant new year.

Hi Kim, I must say that was a great read. I like your little ICE reference. I hope Houdini will continue to innovate in the games area, the Torque Exporter is a start maybe Sidefx could bring back "PROCEED"? I remembered it was shown at GDC many years back during the PS2 era.

Having used 3dsmax, Maya, XSI for past projects, which are now under autodesk I am definitely going to re-download and look at Houdini Apprentice again, I used the previous version briefly and I liked how it was "artist friendly" for personal use unlike the MayaPLE, which had bad watermarkings.

Cheers

That was an amazing statement Kim and it makes me so happy to think that the star's shining bright and no black hole's big enough to engulf it.

On the recent developments, I can't help but remember Mel Brook's Silent Movie which shows this 'big company' called Engulf & Devour which does just that...

There are very few companies who listen to their customers without making them run from pillar to post, from layer to layer. And Houdini is one of them. A small but highly passionate group of geniuses who are passionate about innovation, listening to their customers and delivering truly the most innovative and path breaking creative application out there....

I switched a couple of months ago and as b has pointed out, many more will follow soon in India.

And Houdini is NOT difficult to learn. If you look at it, it is the easiest one out of the lot to learn provided you're not corrupted by others apps. The workflow in Houdini can be defined as 'Plain Common Sense'. a week of Houdini and one never wants to go back into any other app.

I wish Side Effects a great time ahead and hope that you will pounce upon the market now like you've never done before. This is your time.

Best Regards,
Sachin B

Great message Kim...and absolutely essential in my opinion...so thank you! Personally, it's been 4 months now that I'm learning Houdini, and I have to say that is the most elegant, complete and powerful animation package I've ever used in my life. I'm still learning the basics(I'm switching from Maya) and I wish there were more and more tutorials and dvds about every aspect of the software. I really like what 3DBuzz is doing...so keep up the good work and please, please, please stay indipendent!

Thanks,

As a long-time Houdini user, I'd tell anyone moving into the industry, "Learn Houdini first".

To begin with, once you have mastered Houdini, the jobs will find you, you won't have to find them.

Secondly, if you learn Houdini first, you will understand 3d. Unfortunately, you will also be well aware of how elegant the underlying philosophy of Houdini is, and be reminded of this every time you are forced to use one of its competitors.

I am just learning Houdini and I think it rocks! I am a Modo and XSI and Lightwave user. The ONLY reason I tried Houdini was because you guys did a 64bit Mac OSX Leopard port. You are among the few and first 3D companies to have a 64bit leopard/cocoa compliant app and for that I salute you! Keep up the good work.

That’s great response to speculations,
As all know, Sidefx is one of the pioneers of 3d world, & there people (even after 20 years) have same passion for what they do, looking for great time ahead!

Best wishes to Sidefx Team.
