how do.
I wonder if anyone can help. I have a houdini object im trying to fbx into maya. It is driven by primative and point expressions which I think may be the problem.
In the example hip file I can transfer geo1-2 with out maya crashing but when I try geo's3-4 maya crashes.
It also crashes if I bake the animation out as $F.bgeos and then read it back in before exporting as fbx.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Ed
Using:-
Houdini 9.5.183
Maya 8.5
fedora 7

It might be good to get confirmation from SideEffects as to which version of the FBX SDK (2006 or 2009) is being used in Houdini.
I've found Maya's FBX import plugin to be a touch … well … prone to crashing Maya. That plugin (up to Maya 2008 at least) is built using the 2006 SDK.
Even sample apps I write will occasionally crash with the 2006 SDK but are solid with the 2009 SDK.
Of course, this might have absolutely nothing to do with your issue

Hi,
Lots of different topics, mentioned, so I'll go point by point:
1) The observation that ideally you need the latest FBX plugin for Maya is correct. Houdini 9.5 uses FBX SDK 2009.0, the latest available, and despite the theoretical backwards compatibility between the two, crashes will happen if you try to read 2009.0 files with 2006.11 plugins.
2) While Maya sometimes does crash on FBX import in general, I've previously ran into cases when we output a file this way, and if the exporter code is changed slightly the crashes disappear. One good way to test it is to import exported FBX file back into Houdini - if it imports correctly, then it's probably a Maya-specific problem. If not, then it's probably our exporter acting up.
3) To update FBX import/export in Houdini, you unfortunately need to download a fresh build of the whole application. However, you're running one of the most recent builds, which for FBX should be fine (though there were updates made to FBX import relating to lights and cameras today, which will appear in 9.5.184).
4) I just tested exporting geo3 and geo4 from your file using 9.5.184 into Maya 8.5 using their latest FBX importer, and both work fine. Please let me know if the files still don't work once you update to the latest Maya FBX plugins.
