Re-posting this from General Discussion

Does anyone know which version of visual studio will be used to compile Windows Houdini 13? Houdini 12 is built with VC9 or Visual Studio 2008, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm getting back into creating with HDK but I don't want to buy a version of Visual Studio 2008 if I can only use it for another month Smile

I am also interested in a respond from Side Effects.

I do recall reading somewhere that Houdini have many dependent libraries and as such, will require all those libraries to be migrated (migratable ?) past Visual Studio 2008.

Fingers cross.

For Houdini 13 on Windows the main compiler will still be Visual Studio 2008. However, we would like to transition to something newer so there will also be another build using either Visual Studio 2012 or or the just released 2013. Then hopefully, the next major version after Houdini 13 will drop support for VS 2008. It's not clear yet whether the “new” VS build of H13 will be released at the same time as the VS2008 build though, it might lag a bit, esp. if the decision is to go all the way to VS 2013.

Hi Edward,

It's good to hear about the roadmap.

With regards to choosing 2012/2013 compilers on Windows, I'd like to suggest that the recommended compiler for Maya be taken into some consideration.

In light of Houdini Engine (I don't have access so can't comment on the compiler requirements) and the interop of Houdini Engine plugin within external DCC, a common compiler among the eco system will hopefully reduce incompatibility in future as once committed (e.g. with Visual Studio 2008 for Houdini), it will be sometime before a change occurs.

Cheers

Hi Edward,
Have you been thinking about LLVM or MinGW-w64 + some free IDE like a Eclipse or NetBeans, which running on all system which Houdini supports and looks same.

Don't know if this matters to you guys but VS2012 does not support the full c++11 standard. No initializer list, no variadic templates. Also I hope you make good use of move sematics .

Did you upgrade? Is it possible now to use Visual Studio 2012 or later?

Houdini 14.0 uses VS2012. It looks like Houdini 13.0 ended up using VS2012 as well.
Writing code for fun and profit since... 2005? Wow, I'm getting old.
