The viewport can now reload only those textures that are out of date, using the Reload button in the Texture tab of the display options, the Render > Update Textures button on the main menu, or the Update Textures button in the RMB of the Material toggle (right toolbar). The -r option has been added to glcache to do reloading. glcache -c still clears the entire cache.
