Houdini Main Changelogs

Houdini 4.9.556 The Capture SOP now has a "Normalize Capture Weights" toggle which defaults to on. For old style behaviour, turn this off. Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 The Box SOP defaults to generating consolidated points. For the old behaviour, turn off the point consolidation. Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 The Close Pane hotkey has been changed from Alt+z to Alt+/ Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 The Ray SOP now has a tolerance parameter with a default of 0.01. To get the old behaviour, change the tolerance to 0.1. Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 When locking a camera to the view, the default behaviour is now to use the camera pivot. This will cause your viewport to tumble about the center of the camera. To get the old behaviour, hit the camera options (+ beside the camera selector) and change the pivot to the view source. Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 The Sphere, Circle, Tube, and Torus all generate points in different orders in certain axis orientations. This is to make the top/down, and left/right orientation of points when the desired axis is "up" be consistent. To get the old behaviour, append a transform sop with a rotation of 180 degrees. The old behaviour is also restored by the HOUDINI4_COMPATIBILITY flag. Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 Sweep, Revolve, Skin all convert meshes to polygons by default now. Turn this off for the old behaviour. Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 The $HIPNAME variable now always refers to JUST the hipfile name, not including the directory under which it resides. $HIP/$HIPNAME will give the full qualified path. Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 In the top xform state, we now use the viewport's shading mode to determine how to render the stamped portion. This means we can use hidden line here.

Moreover, the wireframe outside of the stamped portion is now drawn so as not to overlap the stamped portion. This is slower than the previous behaviour, but looks much nicer. The old behaviour can be re-enabled by setting HOUDINI_TOP_POS_SINGLE_PASS.

Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 Backward compatibility is a goal we always keep in mind from one major release to the next. Sometimes, however, a new and better technology cannot be embedded in the fabric of the software without dislocating an older technology, often causing an incompatibility with the previous release.

The purpose of this file is to ease the user's transition to a new release by documenting the unexpected changes in the way existing functions work. Anything from a change of hotkey to a change in file format or default parameter value should be recorded here. parameter value should be recorded here.

Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.556 The Sphere, Circle, Tube, and Torus all now have a consistent orientation. When the axis to orient to is up in the viewport, the front side should have the vertices going from left to right. Most of the primitives and axis combinations already did this, so there will be no change. However some (notably the Tube) will have different point orders than before. To recover the old behaviour, append a transform SOP and rotate by 180 degrees about the secondary axis. Fri. December 7, 2001
Houdini 4.9.555
  • Added "Ctrl+x" alias to "Alt+x" for cutting selected OPs;
  • Added "Cut" menu entry to network/list editor and to the OP group editor. Functionality had always been there, just missing from UI.
  • Added "Alt" aliases to the "Ctrl" hotkey for Cut, Copy, and Paste in the custom panel.
  • Changed "Alt+c" to "Alt+k" for appending checkbox button in the custom panel. 'c' is still the hotkey for _inserting_ checkbox button.

Houdini 4.9.555 The Sweep, Revolve, and Skin Surface Operations now default to converting meshes to polygons. For backwards compatibility, these flags should be turned off. Thu. December 6, 2001
Houdini 4.9.554 Object level operations for generating objects now highlight the object being operated on. The Multi-Object operation has an option to highlight selected objects if desired. In both cases, the highlighting works even if the display flag for the object is off, so it is much easier to manipulate objects with their display flag off. Wed. December 5, 2001
Houdini 4.9.553 Bug was fixed where the "Remove Kinematics" option in the Bones operation on IK w/Twist affector bone chains could cause Houdini to crash (not necessarily right away). Tue. December 4, 2001
Houdini 4.9.553 Reorganized the OpenGL parameter page for surface SHOPs. These dialogs used to be extremely wide. Now they are a more normal width. When loading hip files created with 4.9, warnings that say 'Too many elements for parameter "Layer".' These warnings are harmless and will disappear when the file is next saved. Some dialog files for custom SHOPs may need to be rebuilt to adopt the new layout. Tue. December 4, 2001
Houdini 4.9.553 The brush selector now uses overlays on machines that support that, so if your machine has overlay planes but can't handle xoring bitmaps, they will now work. Tue. December 4, 2001
Houdini 4.9.553 The worksheet zoom now allows you to zoom ten times farther out for dealing with extremely large networks. Tue. December 4, 2001
Houdini 4.9.553 New use transparency toggle in the sop/obj render states. Tue. December 4, 2001
Houdini 4.9.552 UV unwrap now supports the spacing parameter for the square layout. Mon. December 3, 2001
Houdini 4.9.552
  • PolyReduce with Mesh Inversion disabled should generate fewer degenerate polygons
  • PolyReduce with Fix Cracking on should not unique points along the edge.
Mon. December 3, 2001
Houdini 4.9.549 Environment variables are now expanded when in Houdini path variables. For example:

        setenv HOUDINI_PATH '$JOB/houdini;&'

will do as one would expect. Furthermore, the ^ is defined in the HOUDINI_DSO_PATH to be the "os_proc" string, and now defaults to:

        @/dso_^;@/dso

This means one can put NT specific dsos in $HSITE/houdini4.9/dso_nt_intel and Irix ones in $HSITE/houdini4.9/dso_irix_mips. As usual, "hconfig -ap" will explain what ^ will expand to on the machine it is run from.

Fri. November 30, 2001
Houdini 4.9.549 The "Cooking Op: " status updater now gives the full path of the op, not just the name. Fri. November 30, 2001
Houdini 4.9.549 A new entry in the right-mouse menu over objects and sops allows users to bring up the channel chooser to scope that op's channels. Look for "Channel Chooser...". Fri. November 30, 2001
Houdini 4.9.549 The Deform SOP now has a Fast Deform mode (on by default) which will speed up deformations by a large amount when the incoming geometry is not changing. Fri. November 30, 2001
