Ok I have moved across to Linux because well those serious CG folke like to work on an operating system ending with an “X”
I am using mandrake because it is the most windows user friendly, it is using the 2.6.3 kernel and is really responsive.
I may not have the words best video card (geforce 4 MX 440 64mb) but I am getting fairly poor performance in Linux compared to Win XP. Now I have the latest NVIDIA drivers, I have tested them with unreal tournament 2004 demo… it may be a little faster than in windows.
my .bashrc file has
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1
export HOUDINI_OGL_DBL_BUFFER_FIX=1
export HOUDINI_OGL_DISABLE_RASTER_IN_OVERLAY=1
If you believe my video card is the problem can you recommend the most Houdini friendly card… i was looking at getting an
(ELSA GLADIAC FX935XT, GeForce4 FX 5900XT, 128MB DDR, AGP 4x/8x, DVI-I, TV-out, D-Sub )
are there any other tricks to getting houdini swinging in linux?
mandreke 10 + houdini = crap openGL ....any help?

Hey meshsmooth,
Have you tried to run Houdini without setting both HOUDINI_OGL environment variables? Also, what kind of performance issues are you having? I believe Carlos Lemus is using a very similar card to you & he is also running Mandrake 10. He did not mention any performance issues.
I'm using a GF4 4200Ti with Fedora Core 1 & 53xx drivers with comparable performance to Win2k.
Cheers!
