Hi I am from India. I want to know if the sidefx internship is only for people from specific country like UK,USA.,etc?
1)What can someone do if the person is not from any one of the countries in the list given below
http://www.international.gc.ca/experience/intro_incoming-intro_entrant.aspx?lang=eng&view=d [international.gc.ca]

2) How can a person get LMO or work permit on his own?

3) Can someone from other country take a visitor visa as the interns wont be paying any tax?

I have been searching and enquiring people from Canada embassy and they have suggested me to take visitor visa.Im really confused as SESI is insisting me for a work permit.Im really looking forward to get involved in the internship.
I know this is offtopic.but still if someone could help me out it would be really great.
Thank you.

Hi there,

I don't think this is a “Houdini Apprentice” topic, but here we go:

1) If you're not in that list, this is where you should go next

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/work.asp [cic.gc.ca]

You WILL need a valid work permit or work visa to become an intern in Canada. There's no way around it at Side Effects or any other serious company, if they did accept it, it would be illegal and they could face serious penalties, as well as the illegal worker (jail or fine and deportation).

2) In order to get a work permit or visa, follow that link I gave you. You can try to get in touch with the Canadian consulate or embassy in your country, but it'll probably be less than a pleasant experience. Your best bet is to find immigration lawyers that can help you navigate the bureaucracy. Even before that, check with Side Effects that they have an opening, when and if you qualify for that, given your skill level.

3) It has nothing to do with tax, it's a legal requirement in Canada (and in most other countries, as far as I know). Even some categories of unpaid work still require a work visa. Some student visas allow a certain number of hours of work per week, but it's usually at the institution you're studying.

I'm not sure you should be asking these questions here at all, I'm no specialist in these things, but everything should be available and explained in plain english in the link above mentioned.

Alternatively you can try to get an internship at a studio in India or somewhere else in south Asia that uses Houdini. There might be less complicated bureaucracy somewhere else (maybe Singapore? ILM has a branch there…).

Cheers and good luck!

I got curious on this work permit thing and found this link:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/temp/workers.asp [cic.gc.ca]

It can take up to 37 months depending which area you are in. Wow.

In order for Side Effects to give you a letter, or formal job offer, they would have to prove to the Canadian government that they are unable to find a Canadian to do the job, (and obtain an HRDC number). This is not a reasonable claim to make for an intern position. This is the same process you would need to go through to hire a foreign worker in another country.
