I am trying to mask an object from the render, but still use it to block particles.
I have a stationary box and particle dust starts in front of it, and flies behind it, thus the box blocks the dust. I want to mask the box, so i can composite the particles later.
There is a little button that you click to do this, right? Where is it?

do you mean you are blocking the particles as in a collision type of block or ju st so the particles are not rendered?
An object's display flag shouldn't effect it from being used as a collision object. If you want to visualize the block and just not render the block you could always set your renderflag at sop level to a unattached nullSOP or on an addSOP.
