Maybe this could be good addition to Mantra PBR :

Thanks for the interesting link, but it looks like it's more geared toward applications like Rhino or SketchUp, which could use a renderer. I'm not sure this can by integrated into Mantra well.. or could it?

I took a quick look at the paper and was disappointed that they didn't give a comparison with Meyer and Anderson's work even though their earlier 2006 paper was referenced (there was an improved paper in 2007). Oh well, I'm probably seeing similarities in the approaches that shouldn't be there to my untrained eye.

I'm tickled by this idea too: http://agl.unm.edu/researchAreasTest/CSProject.php [agl.unm.edu]

And an easy to watch video showing the initial work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXGnIIT7_Gc [youtube.com]

Vray has an implementation of Embree as well.

Mantra 12.5's BVH uses a similar 4-way SIMD intersection algorithm to Embree's SSE incoherent ray intersector - when it was added to mantra, comparing it to embree showed it was pretty close performance-wise. I know Embree was somewhat limited at the time (only triangle intersections, and no motion blur) but it seems they may have removed some of these limitations in the recent release. We'll definitely be watching this project to see if there are more techniques that can help mantra rendering.
