Number ONE: You really sure it has to be a laptop?? Constrained case, no expandability, you`re stuck to what you got. Often you can`t even change HDD or add RAM, and you pay quite a lot compared to same power for the desk.

If it has to be a laptop, avoid ACER, as I had 2 of them getting thermal problems just about when warranty was over.

General advise have a look at your favorite search engine, and prefer a local store where you could have a look at the hardware, regarding access covers for HDD/&RAM should not be covered with a “warranty void” seal.

Also keep in mind you can`t expand anything else than HDD/RAM without much risk.

Then your most limiting facot would be your budget. Go for i7-xxxxHQ/MQ and GTX. and as much RAM you can afford. Keep in mind that they can get only a max of 32GB.

I have ASUS G751JY, works great with Houdini, cooling is great. Large, not super mobile. You can also do renderings with it, but I would recommend desktop for longer renderings.

MSI WT72 Workstation (Intel Xeon 64GB Ram)

I got an Alienware 18 (18.4" IPS display, i7 4930MX (OC to 4Ghz), 32Gb RAM, 2x780m SLI, SSD, etc) and it's putting to shame most laptops out there.
It's pretty big and heavy compared to most other laptops, but in a backpack it's under 10kg with the charger and a coffee thermos, so complaints about its heft and therefore lack of mobility are unfounded IMO, at least for an adult healthy male.

more important than the cpu will be the amount of memory.
cpu will calculate faster, but if you don't have memory to put the results then @#%%^@….

if you can get the best cpu with toncs of ram go for that.
