Omnidirectional Camera UV Projection

Hi, since VR omnidirectional renders (latlong) are used more often and i actually wanted to generate a projection from the an omni directional / spherical camera to project uv's. Unfortunately houdinis uv texture does only support perspective projection.

Any ideas appreciated.

May be changing the projection to cubic and from there should be direct?

So you say instead of doing spherical maps, create a cube map and project cubic? I did a bruteforce solution for now, i am mapping a little sphere witht he uv's then i am shooting points from the target geometry back to the little sphere and transfer the uv attributes. Which works fine, but i wished there is a smarter solution.
