I need to build a bunch of shapes that look like the one attached. It will also need to potentially animate but that is a secondary thing right now. Is there any workflow that would be best to use ? I need to have enough control to be able to art direct the silhouette of it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that would be done with a volume trail. However, I am not very good at this (see my recent post).

howdy larkis. there's tons of ways one could create this, but here's an example of one good workflow:

  1. create your free-form path using the draw curve tool in the viewport
  2. create a profile shape, like a sphere
  3. scatter points inside the profile shape
  4. animate the scattered points along your free-form path
  5. accumulate the points over time using the trail sop or the solver sop
  6. connect the points into lines using the add sop
  7. convert the lines into polygons using vdbs
