A RFE was filed with these asking for a PaintLayerSOP that doesn't require bones and readily outputs the values present in the UnpackCaptureSOP.

I ended up doing a quick video to explain the why of CaptureLayerPaintSOP and why requesting something similar for arbitrary applications.

It would be great for landscaping, motionFx and so many other things.
Would be cool to have a single PaintMask node that wraps all this up. Very cool.
