Hi all!

Just wondering if anyone is using High Sierra with Houdini yet.

Any issues?

Thanks,

Please, toss me your fav Linux distro. I have several Mint machines loosing network connections on the new Asus Prime 370 Ryzen Rackboxes.

Thank you.

Thanks. I've had trouble with fstab mounts in the past and prefer autofs. I'll give it another try with the newest version, as the current LTS didn't boot the Prime 370 Ryzen after install.

Have a great day.

Not sure what changed but the Python panel, i.e. colour picker, and the help pane are now running as fast as Linux. H16.0.752, MacOS 10.13 17A405. Might also be something to do with turning off the firewall. Not sure.

Hoping that too, it's just that running the Linux has been so much more productive, not because of better OpenGL/CL but simply less GL crashing, smoother/faster help, a QT5 interface that doesn't pause intermittently, ladder menus that work properly with a Wacom tablet, and, 4K support for MMB info windows. (yes all bugs have been logged)

yeah it’s a shame here are so many issues there but I am still really glad they provide a version.
Otherwise I’d be using a virtual machine, which is a bit of a pain.

I'd be curious about the viability of running a virtualized form of macOS within a high-capacity Linux host machine. I'm unaware of any VM platform with native GPU performance, but maybe that doesn't matter much since Apple's desktop 3D hardware standard is outdated anyway.

Some further testing on 10.13 and in general it's heaps better than 10.12 but still has that terrible bug where the tab menu doesn't stay open whilst browsing it and will drop a random node, perhaps the one the cursor was over. This is a vanilla High Sierra install with essentially nothing else in the system. Not sure how anyone can use Houdini on a Mac with this type of crazy bug that affects the central part of Houdini.

QT5 version.

Oh yeah, I get this in Sierra. It’s pretty annoying. As soon as I see it I just automatically save and reload Houdini.

I also find that every few times the autocomplete on node paths won’t work. Do you get that?

I have no idea how to repro any of this though. They seem so unpredictable sadly.

Wacom just released an updated driver 6.3.25-2 that fixes the MMB ladder menu jumping, but, now the viewport won't dolly with righ-click and the MMB ladder menu only works if it's Click & Tap not Hover Click. 3 steps forward, 1 step back.

Ahhh man! Wacom drivers! I’m still a few back I think. It’s so frustrating because a bad driver essentially makes their product useless but they never seem to concerned about fixing them.

Hey as a side note you should check out this Wacom addon for Mac https://www.marcmoini.com/sx_en.html [www.marcmoini.com] You have to deactivate it for Houdini because it messes with the ladder but for most things it’s great!

This time they were good. I submitted that MMB bug on Sept 1st and they fixed it within 6 weeks. Not too bad but kind of sad and boring that DCC software like Houdini relies on many interlocking gears that don't all play together very well.

High Sierra is getting there but in reality we need better native Houdini Mac support. An impossible dream would be something like Pixalmator Pro:

That's encouraging! I might jump over in a week or so and see how I go.

Hey, Just going to add to the noise here… It's so damn frustrating! My wacom has been acting out lately as well and I was still using Sierra! I just updated to high sierra yesterday in hopes of better support but nothing! Even with the new drivers it's still finicky and I can't tell whose fault it is anymore.
Dusting off my mouse for the time being.

Cheers
