Here's a trick:
1. Take a gulp of coffee, don't swallow.
2. New houdini session/typical obj level desktop.
3. Ensure your /obj network is displayed in list form(hit ‘t’ to toggle).
4. Ensure your /obj network is in Hierarchical list mode.
5. Note existing default object called “model”.
6. Add a new geometry object.
7. Double click in it's name field in the list, and rename to “newmodel”.
8. Note the new object is called “newgeo1”!!!!
9. Expel coffee in a classic spit-take, ruining your monitor, demand two new top of the line Dell monitors [www1.us.dell.com] as replacement from your boss.
10. Ignore tech support claims this is somehow related to a bogus uniform distribution call.
Cheers,
J.C.

Nope. It's a bug. To clarify, it *only* happens in Hierarchical *and* List mode(together), and I've verified that “model” isn't selected. I'd be curious to know how that could be considered a feature, anyway! You also get some wonderful funky stuff if you keep entering it - on Linux it keeps making the name longer, and longer. Really.
