My question is, can we combining the rigged and animated character in Maya with the VFX (Destruction, Particles, etc.) generated in Houdini? Is that workflow possible?
I don't mind jumping back and forward between programs but I don't know if there is any possible method for this workflow.

There are a few different options for bring these two apps together.
For instance, you can bring the animated character into Houdini via FBX or Alembic then add your effects. You can also use the Houdini Engine for Maya plug-in to create assets out of your effects that you can use inside the Maya UI.
