Is it only crashing when started from the terminal? Also, what are your system specs?

On some configurations, sending usage statistics can result in a crash at launch. But that would be upon every launch, not just with a single project file.

Try deleting this folder, if present:

~/Library/Preferences/houdini/16.5/stats/

Then disable usage data collection, if enabled:

I had a similar DisplayAlert error using OSX 10.9.5 with H16.5 crashing on launch and I only use shells on the Mac so I can not verify if double clicking on the app works… I

Upgrading to High Sierra OSX 10.13.3 fixed the problem for me. Don't want to force an OS update on anyone but it is good to stay somewhat current on the Mac. That is if your other apps are supported with the upgrade as well.
