That's the node group editor, it used to be toggled with the ‘X’ key, but now it's shift-Z.
It's completely undocumented, but it's fairly simple. You can create a ‘group’ from selected nodes. And then you can hide that group of nodes, or unhide it. Different contexts expose other actions. For objects you can toggle display flags, sops you can toggle template/bypass flags. For any context, you an reselect the group, and the nodes in the group will be selected again. The reverse is also possible.

my memory must be fuzzy, was there a way to refer to the groups you created using a symbol + the name of the group?
say i create a group "myGroup", then on a separate network, i may want to object merge only that custom group.
