Hi everyone,

I'm new to Houdini (and in 3D in general), and I dont find how to make smooth/not smooth quikly like in Maya.

I've tried the Smooth function but it's not so simple and results are quite… stange oO

But… Houdini rocks

Hi,

Have you tried the Subdivide SOP?

Thanks for your response.

Yes I've tried, but that's not what I'm searching for. I just would like to view the result smoothed with a limited number of polys and have the possibility to smooth/desmooth quickly.

Modifications is difficult with a lot of subdivisions :-/

But maybe I'm not using functions correctly ?

Do you mean smoothing normals according to the angle between neighbor faces? You can try to use a ‘vertex’ sop and change ‘Keep normal’ to ‘Cusp normal’ and adjust the angle…. Is that what you were looking for?

there isn't a way to do this AFAIK…

if i understood you correctly ..

see the screens below .

> i appended a subdivide sop as the last node of the network .

> selected its display flag

> continued to model ‘above’ the subdivide sop ( the cage ).

to have control over the subdivision ‘s level :

> i just dragged the ’Depth' label of subdivide sop over the viewport .

so , i got a slider to control the subdi-depth .

keep modeling in viewport ..

.cheers

Thanks all for your responses.

zarti -> yes this is the way I've find to do what I want

In fact, this is the result I have in Maya
Base width my cube

And if I click on 3

Juste by switching 1 or 3 I can view the smooth / normal version of my object. This is what I ask for into Houdini (if it exists), or maybe your solution is the only one to do this ?

EDIT : after some new tests I thinks this is the best way to do this, I'm just so noob

this may be helpful.

http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/render/subdivision.html [www.sidefx.com]

Select the object.

In the parameter editor, click the Render tab.

Turn on Render polygons as subdivision (Mantra).

An object that is rendered as subdivision does not automatically display as subdivided in the 3D view. If you want to see the object as subdivided in the view, you need to also set Display as.
