Weld Edges equivalent?

Hi,

Is there a way (because a SOP doesn't seem to exist) to achieve what would one get using an WeldEdges Op in XSI?
Say I have this piece of geo, that I've obtained by mirroring the top half on -Y. I want to keep disconnected the round parts (marked with orange), but fuse the two halves along the horizontal (marked with magenta).
As you well know, selecting the points of the edges I want to weld and applying the WeldEdges Op gets the job done.

In Houdini, applying a Fuse to the same selection of points, I get a single point where the two halves and the round parts meet (marked with green), instead of two. And then I have to manually disconnect edges and re-fuse points that don't belong and respectively belong to the desired parts. A chore, that I'd rather not do if there's a work-around, although I'll probably still file a RFE for an edge weld SOP that works with points as well, like the XSI one.

edit: I added a 3rd image showcasing a simpler example.

Seems like a mission for the new fuse with attribute option no?

I tried the Fuse sop, even with the target group, but I didn't manage to get what I've described above. And defining the two groups, when you have points on top of each other is a pita.
How would you approach this with attributes? But beyond this question, lies another, a poignant one I think: when I'm modeling a gun do I want to fiddle with attributes when in XSI (and other programs I presume) I drag select the points, execute an op and move on with my modeling in like, 3 seconds?

I would have to give it a try at home. But the idea is that you create an attribute on the points based on an edge selection pairs that forces the correct points to fuse together but I agree it's quite annoying to have to go into R&D for things that supposed to be a surface level operation for an artist and given Houdini is in need of more topology altering building blocks and edge support I think the best option is indeed to push for RFEs.

Yes I agree with the issues when it comes to flow.

Here's a starter. Needs work to deal better with corner points ;

I do miss XSI open edge highlight.

Oh great, I'm working mostly with 16.5 these days and didn't realize the open edge highlight had been already implemented.

Did you see what I mean by fuse attribute?

Yep, just checked it now. Thanks!
Filed a RFE for the weld edges feature. Hopefully, it will see the light some day.

@goat doesn't seem to address my issue here, but I shall see after testing it. either way, a good addition to the the toolset.
