sub divide an object based on a black and white texture

Hey all,
is there a way to sub divide an object based on a black and white texture?

to give a little context to this, what i want to do is create brick shaped polygons on an object, most of the examples on the net
seems to deal with a simple grid(such as http://www.tokeru.com/cgwiki/?title=Houdini#Voronoi_cluster_and_fracture)

Have a look at these tutorials [www.sidefx.com], particularly the Modelling the panel section. I'm not sure if they'll do exactly what you want but they deal with using textures (Photoshop files in this case) to modify geometry.
