Is there a way to set the slider to move in increments of 1 or .1 for example?

Yes, don't use the slider. Instead, middle-click and hold with your mouse in the number field. A custom menu will popup called the “ladder”. From there, you can chose which multiplier you wish to use when moving the mouse left or right to change the number.

You can also scroll the values. Hold Shift for small increments, and Ctrl for large increments.
