Firstly, is there a way to extrude several adjacent faces
as one seamless entity as seen in editable mesh in 3dsmax?
A toggle to do this in polyextrude would be handy.

Is there a way to chamfer edges without using the divide sop, as
it has undesirable results. For example if you divide the edges about
the top face of a box it will also split the side edges.
Also is it possible to chamfer while leaving the original edge?

How practical would the following idea be:
Double clicking an edge for edge-loop select and double-clicking again
for edge ring select.

Can the ortho grid be hot-keyable? And how do I set its colour/level?

Is it possible to change the selection method to CTRL+select for add
and ALT+select for remove? Or at least having a single hot-key to cycle
between add, remove, and replace?

To extrude multiple faces seamlessly, choose polyextrude SOP and then select your faces. Once you got your manipulator handle for your faces, right click on the handle and you will see a menu option called

Toggle Local/Global control

if you switch to global then you can extrude your faces as one solid face.

Under the Dialogs drop down menu in Houdini there is a Hotkey Manager. This is where you can change your hotkeys for various tasks. Vislab has tutorial video on the Hot key Manager, check it out

Hope that helps

excellent thanks, I'll try that.
Also I've previously searched the hotkey
manager for toggling the ortho grid and
changing selection methods without any luck.

displaying the ortho grid cannot be hot-keyed. you can see this by doing the “ctrl-alt-shift” and clicking on it. you get a message saying it isnt able to be hot keyed.

to change the level (spacing?) of the grid, go into the window you want to change (top, left, front, etc) and hit d. display options window comes up. in the viewport tab, you will find grid spacing.

for the replace and remove hotkey setup. i have assigned s for replace and S for remove. using those keys dumped two options i dont use. i think they were enter favorite operation and something else.

so now, i usually have it in replace mode. if i want to discreetly remove, hit shift+s. then hit s afterwards to go back into replace mode.

that video on vislab will explain the process. the quick way is to “ctrl-alt-shift” and click on the button you want to hotkey. a window pops up and you can assign a hotkey and it checks to see if there are any conflicts with your choice.

hope that helps!
