How to make a ripple with cube matrix?

I wanna make a ripple which composed by cube matrix,such as the pic below.But my skill isn't proficient enough. Could someone give me some advice?Thx.

You might want to look at the SuperPinTable [sidefx.com] example over on the exchange(just search for “superpintable”).

Hey tankboy, here's just a little test on your file to get a more random look about it. Not sure what you were using it for, but this sort of resembles the animated sequence example you posted.
