I installed and authorised 3Delight 6.5

However when I try to render with it using 9.5 I get RenderDL crash.
RenderDL is 3Delight's rendering bin like PRMAN's prman.exe.

I don't understand why the crash happens.

The Rendram ROP is set to 3Delight and render command is set to renderdl.

Anyone else having issues with 3Delight and H 9.5 under 64 bit Windows

Well I hit on a quandry. Where information from DNA (in their docs) and Houdini features are mismatched.

According to DNA the RendermanROP needs to be set 3Delight v7. Houdini 9.5 suppourts as far as 6.5. I think that is the cause of the crash.

What I don't get is why would DNA docs state to set ROP to a setting it does not have? Weird.

On Mays side 3Delight works great.

I'd ignore 3Delight's docs. If you installed 3Delight 6.5, then setting the target to 6.5 seems logical.

Programs shouldn't crash, so if you have a 3delight file which was generated by Houdini that is causing 3delight to crash then you need to take that up with DNA's support team.

Actually I have V8 delight. Duh!

I beleived that 3Delight V8 For Maya 4.0 (full product name) was 3Delight 6.5 build with updated Maya plugins. But the Delight renderDl is v8.
I am wondering if H 9.6 will rev up its suppourt for Delight to V8

David, i did a test render and seems 3delight8 just works from houdini using the 3delight6.5 option. I am not using windows though, linux here…You might try to set the option HOUDINI_DEFAULT_RIB_RENDERER=3Delight6.5

Hope this get's it working for you.

edit:removed the quotes on 3delight6.5

HI

Yes 3delight 8 works fine in houdini just like Pagefan said
add the environment variable
HOUDINI_DEFAULT_RIB_RENDERER=3Delight6.5 (no quotes)

you can check out your 3delight installation by opening the command prompt and typing renderdl -test if that shows you a nice render, then is working

if not post the results to see if I can help you

I have been trying to get to work with 3Delight 6.5 render commands, and with different display drivers (ip, X11, framebuffer). I have run through many perms. Just does not work at all. As soon as render button is pressed. Vista64 reports renderdl.exe has crashed….

It simply does not work

I don't know what to do!
renderdl -test works fine. The space invader comes up.
Does not work at all in houdini.

My render commnad is set to renderdl
Properties display is set to i-display. But that setting is irrelelevant
Display Device is set to tiff
Display channels is set to rgba

The result is the same. renderdl crashes when houdini tires to render.
Simple scene.
One camera , one light, and a sphere.

I can't test render through i-display, I can't test render in GUI, and I cannot do a normal render from a ROP. From my POV 3Delight functionality in Houdini is DEAD!

you responded, making my post irrelevant~

That is good that renderdl -test is working.

Can you export a RIB file from Houdini and render it from the command prompt?

Or can you render any non-houdini generated RIB from the command line?

Also, I would imagine you went through all of this?

it's for a linux environment, but still should apply for the most part.

Does this mean it works fine now David? If not, could you try rendering with the framebuffer as display device?

This is very frustrating.

It means that 3delight is installed correctly and works fine. But it does NOT work with Houdini 9.5! Renderdl.exe crashes when houdini tries to render.
I have tried it with all combinations of device drivers and displays. It simply does not work!

calm down

I guess this might be silly but, are you using the apprentice version? cause that can't use external renderers.

Hi ,

I had the same problems as Bernard . I just can tweak some paramaters like filters or pixel sampling . No way to to see shaders or textures in shader view . The slo/sli files must first be translated to dso or something else i guess before succeding in that way , and in that last part i failed . so I'm just using Mantra and it's doing must of the jobs . Renderman and 3delight are Prman compliant renderers like Mantra . How ever it's would nice if i can use mantel ray standalone with houdini master , but even at this step i failed . I decided to not waist my time doing things like in Maya or other packages .

Regards .
