I am sorry, Houdini 5 did not have an apprentice version.

Houdini 5.5 did have an apprentice version….
but v5/v5.5 didn't have the model SOP

why do you need that version?
files saved with v5 should still open in v9.5 - with a bit of work to fix stuff…

alright then, I hereby reveal the great secret : I am absolutely new to houdini. I got some training material ( 3dbuzz old VTMs) and guess they do work on such early version.
Another thing is that I hope that system specs for old versions are not high, for the machine I'm working on is not that fast nor rich in ram.
So, having exposed my deepest secrets…could you kindly help me get an apprentice version of 5.5 or so.
UHHH..what a releif !!

I followed those buzz tutorials in v8 with no problem. With the exception of the sprite stuff in the particle tutorial you should be able to follow in v9 without issue.

the vtms I have in mind should work quite well in 9.5 with some fixing. I guess it is easier to pick up 9.5 than 5. the helpfiles are quite well done.
Why waste time with a outdated version. what kind of computer do You have?

for the time being I'm running a Dell optiplex 330 , a 2,3 GHz core 2 and one giga ram…a built in display card… XP SP3, it runs MAYA pretty well to some extend , but current apprentice version of houdini keeps crashing and and fails to even change the viewport , the thing that makes the learning curve on this machine really steep.
thank you

perhaps setting the HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE variable to 1 may help prevent the crashes if they are related to your integrated graphics card:

I would expect broader video hardware compatibility with newer Houdini versions in general.
