If you need a confirmation of the type of trouble we can get into over ‘beliefs’ have a look at any news site.

At the end of the day, it's up to the artist to decide what works for them. Try it. Make up your own mind.

Houdini's procedural paradigm means that you model in a different way to other packages. Sometimes this requires a little more thought, other times not.

It perhaps doesn't have some of the tools that exist in other packages, but if you know what you are doing I find you can work very quickly.

I do all my modeling in Houdini and have no problem with it.

There's nothing stopping you from making amazing models in Houdini. No doubt there is room for improvement… for example the lack of automatic local orientation of handles, or the lack of edge loop sliding. BUT… even for non-procedural stuff, having the SOP network is so nice that I don't see myself using anything else.

I think what keyframe said was the best advice, you should try it for yourself and decide if you like the workflow.

What they said. It's definitely different than other packages.

However, I believe it's better, as it kind of gives you a history of what you've done, and you can see what's going on.

There are some weaknesses with particular tools, (as with any other app) and some problems with the core of the modeler when it comes to proceduralism. Despite this you still get a useful set of versatile tools to cover most scenarios - especially where models need to be changed (remodelled, animated or mapped) in reaction to other parts of your scene, as opposed to being a static ‘locked-down’ prop.
As for speed its a matter of practice.

Isn't it possible to make those modeling tools which exist in Maya in houdini using VEX? i have heard they are pretty powerful and are used to make new tools.

VEX only modifies point data so you're limited to “creating” certain type of modeling tools/functions.

In addition, VEX doesn't work with primitives and it doesn't have the ability to create geometry.

That said, VEX is really good at what it does. For example, replacing certain point operations with VEX speed them up many times.

The PythonSOP is probably the best bet for creating general tools, or building SOP OTLs - which can probably get you pretty far.

Unfortunately picking/selection tools and some other useful handle/alignment/snapping tools are things that can't be written by anyone except SESI.
