Hi

Most 3D packages let you use reference images to work with while modelling.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial on how to set them up in Houdini?

You can use a Background image. You load this into your viewport using the Viewport Display Options - ‘d’ hotkey in the Viewport. Go to the Background tab -> Image source tab and you can reference an image either from disk or from your COP Network.

Cool works.

But it's gives very strange results.

I figured the right view port and the perspective view is ok but I can't get the orientation for the Perspective view right. I.E is facing the wrong way. Grrrrrrrrr.

Any ideas?

Check under the 3D Viewport tab, (next to the Image Source tab), you might need to toggle on the “Automatically Place Image” button. Or toggle it off, and adjust it's position manually.

You might also want to try using a grid and a UV Quick Shade SOP to do this. The viewport does a pretty nice job of rendering textures, so you might be able to get this approach to work.

good luck doode
