Verts with split UVs won't render properly - seam

I've imported an obj that has a seam where vertices don't have shared UVs. If I look at the verts in the spreadsheet, it seems right in the UV display in the spreadsheet, I check the two entries of a point that's right on the seam (in the two different faces that share it). the UV numbers are different, so houdini is bringing it in right. It looks right in the UV viewport as well.

But the object is rendering with that seam (that is familar from doing polar mapping in the UVtexture SOP without “fix boundary seams ” turned on). Where it doubles back again and includes the whole map in a two-polygon border.

How can i fix it? I tried “fix seams” in the UVtexture but that blows away my existing UVs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

and I notice that there is a vertex attribute called uv - not a point attribute, so why isn't it working automatically? cry
