This might be outside of the scope of SideFX Labs, but some interesting work is underway to use Stable Diffusion [arstechnica.com] as an almost-live rendering assistant. Apparently C4D, Blender, and Maya are first on the list, but maybe Houdini could be another candidate.

You may have tried this already, but opening the Windows on-screen keyboard panel might indicate if some modifier key is getting stuck. You'd likely see weird behavior elsewhere, if that were the case.
You could also check your Houdini hotkeys for commands that involve the arrow keys. Maybe something got unintentionally remapped.

I've experienced a similar performance degradation on MacOS 10.14.15, though 10.15.3 seems to be a bit better. Ended up downgrading to Houdini 18.0.348, which still runs normally.

Try renaming your preferences folder to see if a clean slate improves anything. (Available in
The system upgrade might have changed your computer's hostname, which could thwart licensing but would be unlikely to cause a crash. Verify in the File Sharing preference pane or with:

Maybe Windows has commandeered the button for pen and touch input, though if that were the case, all applications would likely exhibit that behavior, too. Or maybe your Wacom control panel has mapped right-clicking to a different function for Houdini 18. Those settings can be customized per application, and don't always recognize upgraded installations.
Make sure that your Houdini preferences still specify that “Use Alt Key for View Controls” is enabled. You should also be able to use the spacebar instead.

Yes, though note it's been renamed to SideFX Labs in newer versions of Houdini. Some tools, like GoZ import/export, don't currently run on MacOS.

Hard to judge from the screenshot, but it could be that the overall scale of your object is far larger than that of the tutorial. Or perhaps your particle visualization scale is too low.

I've used C4D on and off since first hearing about it in the 1990s, and have always been impressed with its clean design and approachability.
The straightforward property panels and in-place viewport effects make it easy to toy around without committing to a full render, and it looks like R20 will further improve such interaction.

EDIT: of course assuming you have such point attribute on the input curves
In case anyone is unfamiliar with how to do that, here's an example using a ramp:
Point wrangle:
float ramp_position = fit(float(@ptnum), 0, @numpt, 0, 1); f@width = chramp('Sweep_Profile', ramp_position);

Unless the assets you describe are some kind of special Houdini Digital Assets (OTLs), then a boolean subtraction operation ought to work as expected.
In your example, try merging Assets 1 and 2 into a single entity first (serving as boolean input A), then wire in Asset 3 as boolean input B.
Also, make sure the primitive type of all your sources is either polygon or polygon mesh.

On some configurations, sending usage statistics can result in a crash at launch. But that would be upon every launch, not just with a single project file.

Yes, the ill-behaved middle mouse ladder menus you've described have been an ongoing problem. Particularly on MacOS with multiple monitors, it seems. Houdini windows on a secondary display (the one without the Dock and menubar) seem more prone to the issue.
But at the moment, everything seems to be harmonious with Houdini 16.5.330, Wacom driver 6.3.27-2, and MacOS 10.13.2.

Wow, lovely work. Thank you for sharing.
For some reason the attribute wrangle “tentacle_points” fails to compile in 16.5.330 because of the lineSeems to work normally upon changing the variable name.
But that's the same way it's defined in the expression cookbook. Anyway, I'm going to have to spend some more time playing around with this neat system you've designed.
