I am considering getting a Macbook Air and I am wondering if Houdini Apprentice is fluid enough for basic rendering (I don't know how best to explain what I mean)? I guess I am talking about I guess anything not needing a Render-Farm? I could get the Pro with SSD but I would prefer the Air for its portability(power, lightness).

Chris SomervilleI'm afraid for now it appears that we have to do a manual install for the license's for Houdini 11. Hopefully SESI will have the problem worked out soon.
I purchased a HD license for Houdini 11 and it will not install.

Unfortunately the links to the tutorials say page not found.
I learned through: The Magic of Houdini book, The Gnomon Workshop DVD's, Digital Tutors, the Tutorials on this site, Peter Quints videos and from my start with Blender3D- 2.45 to 2.49b.

kipe
1.stamps(“../OUT”, “DATAPATH”, “../.:grid/Geometry”)
-../.:
2./obj/sim_impacts:copyGroup*/Geometry
-:copyGroup*/Geometry
3.op:`opinputpath('.',1)`
-op:
1) That means previous path
3) op means operator
2) I can't remember fully what that means.
You can also check the documentation help that comes with Houdini

You could use the connectivity sop followed by a partion sop in order to
create primitive groups and then apply materials on a per group basis.
Thanks john_z, I will try that later tonight or this weekend and see how it goes.

Is it possible to use just one Platonic Object(Utah Teapot) and have multiple materials on it: one for the body and maybe two for the lid? Or do I have to use multiple objects and just delete everything else and then use a Merge SOP?

Thanks pclaes that works but I also found one video that I was thinking of by davekaul on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWm07oqgKbc [youtube.com]. The other video must be on Digital Tutors I will re-subscribe and look at the videos again.

Add a Wave CHOP.
Period is the time in seconds for one complete wave. Therefore 1/30 will do you.
You have to increase the Sample Rate to what you want. 44100 for CD quality works. Pick a value and use that for all the sample audio inputs. Channel reference works well here.
Finally increase the amplitude using the Amplitude slider for quieter or louder. Sine waves are nice and forgiving on speakers.
Now you have your drone sine wave at 30hz
Btw, try 1/60 and you will get that all familiar buzz to simulate interference from AC power. Simulates plugging in to an old Amp with a strat under a bunch of fluorescent lighting very nicely.
Thanks Jeff, I'll try this out tonight and let everyone know how it went.

Morbo
someone uploaded a C3PO synthesizer to the exchange – it's a similar android - maybe you can tweak some parameters on that.
WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
Morbo: I just searched the exchange and I couldn't find it.

I have previously stated in a previous thread about using Dalek Voices and I know I have to use a 30hz Sine Wave(Wikipedia), but for the life of me I just can't figure out how to do it in Houdini. Is there anyone out there who can help me :?: Any and all help is appreciated.
Also does anyone know how to create the new Supreme Dalek Voice?

mzigaib: I'm glad you got it sorted out. My thoughts were:
1) match the reflective mapping of the glass object with the chrome object
2) increase the reflective limit as was my mis-wording earlier with the depth.
I'm still thinking a little with Blender 3D which is where I got my start.
Also, it might be a good idea to save the image offline so your computer doesn't need to be connected all the time to get the image(s).

mzigaibLet's go through a Checklist:
Sorry not being clear, I tried to illustrate the part of the chrome ball inside the glass ball is not receiving reflections, I am using the default materials from houdini for glass and reflection.
I hope I could be clear.
Anyway thanks for the attention.
1st) the chrome ball is inside the glass ball (co-ordinates match, scale doesn't)
yes/no
2nd) If this is already a sphere inside a sphere, then there is a depth setting to change, I am not at a computer with Houdini to test it out.

Technical Discussion » Converting a Logo: Digital Tutors Lesson

I am having a problem with the Digital Tutors Lesson on “Converting a Logo to Geometry”. I have opened the file and substituted my own image which works as it should, but when I open a new session of Houdini and start from scratch it doesn't. I will post a picture later today because I don't have it on me. To explain in the mean-time: I get things sticking out in various places and can-not get the vertexes to look smooth as they should? Picture it like a sphere: instead of round and smooth as the basic primitive that we have it is more like the Sun(noisy).

The book “The Magic of Houdini” is really good, starts you out from nothing and explains everything. It uses version 8 of Houdini, but you can still download that here under support.
I dont recommend either Garman's Gnomon DVD or the Digital Tutors Houini DVDs, both are for advanced users who already understand how to do expressions in an app like Maya.
Where would one find the Digital Tutors Houdini DVD's? There are all online and can't be downloaded for offline viewing.

I remember seeing a video that included taking a circle creating a NURBS Curve and then scaling it using an expression which I for the life of me can't remember? If anyone either remembers the video and/or the expression used please tell me.

Lyonz
I have done this but it still seems to take ages to load ?
Lyonz: There are several things I am looking at:
1) What are your computer specs?
2) Is the File Node Active and connected when it is set to Read?
3) Are you caching out from the first frame to the last from on the playbar? With this: first try playing the sim normally then w/o closing Houdini activate the File Node and try that.
I know this is alot to take in so, hang in there?

I believe if you just change the File Nodefrom Write to Read that should work as the most simplest way of loading the sim files in.
