Excited to see this post!
I am a Phd student in physics, and I am very interested in using Houdini to build tools about numerical simulations(PDE, especially
solving Maxwell Equation such as FDTD, Boundary Element Method, etc).
I'd like to join and give feedbacks!

Hi there. I started a VFX /Houdini discord server for this very purpose. Here is the link for it: https://discord.gg/qH5JBhCTcM [discord.gg]

Try removing the ‘ after the first bracket and the ’ before the final bracket. Cheers!

Yes. When you fracture an object Houdini should create groups for each of the pieces, plus two groups called: inside , and outside.
Or you can create your own groups based on your pieces. Using these groups you can then use material sops to only affects certain groups. Cheers!

Try exporting as .abc/alembic instead. Rigging data I find is exported better that way.

Can I ask who gave you the project file? maybe if it was a teacher/friend/co-worker they'd be willing to show you how it works. If it was a tutorial file you got off of a website/video/etc try revisiting the video. However, caches won't load the data they generate unless load from disk is turned on. If this is turned on while the cache is saving out, and you are playing back your simulation you may run into an error where only half of the simulation loads correctly.
Make sure your file caches are saving out all under different file names so they are not overriding each other. It can be a bit frustrating to realize that you've been saving over the same cache over and over again.
Hope this helps!

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » RBD Glue object and Vellum Grains

Try separating the confetti simulation and the RBD simulation into separate object nodes. Therefore you can make one sim visible, and the other one off at certain times to view the simulation. You could then bring in the egg geo into the vellum simulation and then turn it off when the egg hits the ground. Hope this makes enough sense, and helps!

Try some of these hotkeys: space+g sets the camera to home view, and just focuses the object, while space+shift+f does not rotate the camera. Hope this helps.

Not sure if this is helpful, but I've run into the same issue. But with with specific simulations. Such as water, particle advection, pretty such anything involving the particlestoVDB node, and sometimes lava. What it really comes down to is to understand what things your computer can and cannot handle. So you can plan ahead and add caches or keep your voxels at a suitable level. Using the flipbook usually helps so much with the cooking issues I'm finding.

I love the camera movement! If you were ever to take a stab at it again, I'd probably recommend some cloud sims to overlap the spaceship crashing through the clouds.

Maybe approaching it from a vellum standpoint would be harder than using grains. Grains might work better as you could clump the particles together and create a cakie mess.

Have you tried caching out your ocean sim before you rendered it in the viewer? That usually helps for viewing the simulation.

Try remapping the dissipation of the smoke or turning down the life expectancy of the particles on the POP source. Or playing around with the life variance as well.

Hi there. Usually if I'm trying to split geometry in half or intersect with something, I use a Clip SOP, or a Boolean. Not sure if they would work on an explosion though.
