Most awesome!
I saw the big Leopard on the SESI home page and was floored!
Thanks guys.

If this were another software I'd suggest locking the wheel to only allow rotation in one axis, and then parent to a null that would be locked to only allow ‘y’ axis rotation for the swivel.
Fairly new to Houdini so I'm not sure if that's the approach to use here.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » NO Books

Authors (and Publishers) go where the money is.
Houdini, while excellent, does not yet have the huge market share of Maya or 3D Studio Max.
Having said that, SESI is working very hard to make Houdini more accessible, easier to learn, and to grow market share. I myself am a new convert trying to learn the program.
In addition to books there is also the 3D Buzz On-line Houdini classroom:
http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/sv_houdini.php [3dbuzz.com]
as well as Digital Tutors training:
http://www.digitaltutors.com/store/product.php?productid=3423&cat=84&page=1 [digitaltutors.com]
and CMI VFX:
http://www.cmivfx.com/product_houdini_fundamentals.asp [cmivfx.com]
Either of which sounds well worth the money.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Help with the Sticky Node

Working through the basic tutorials in the “Magic of Houdini” and have hit a snag.
The Sticky Node isn't working for me, and the help page seems incomplete.
How do you select the geometry that will ‘stick’ to the now sticky geometry? Does it require parenting to the node? A selection somewhere else perhaps?
I've tried a few things and nothing seems to work.
Thanks.
Edit: Okay - got it. Helps to turn the page and keep reading. I still think the on-line help needs expanding however. It should mention Parenting of the stuck geometry, among other things.

A bit pricey but very good, you can check out the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I've attended in person and also via Online:

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Turn Off Illumination in 3D Viewport

I'm running Apprentice with a marginal setup. My video display really isn't up to the job, however, I'm getting pretty far with the basics of Houdini.
When I add a light to my scene, everything slows to a crawl. I suspect this is an openGL issue.
Is there anyway to disable illumination in the viewport? Rendering is one issue, but setting the lights position and angle is another.
Thanks.

I'd be in favor of an OSX port. Mac's have multi-processor capability, and fairly decent video boards now. Plus the OS seems to have settled down. All the jumping from OS9 to OSX and then to intel processors certainly must have given developers fits. But the dust may be settling.

This came up for me also, just a few days ago in fact. A quick search of the forums for ‘NT_generator’ revealed this thread:
http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=103 [sidefx.com]
Which has solved the problem for me. (So far!)
Check also this referring thread:

Hope that helps.
