Historically Radeon cards and Houdini have never got on. I'm not sure what the latest is though, but I believe people are having some joy. Search here (or odforce) for Catalyst - I'm sure there's a remedy somewhere for this??

Your file works fine for me.
H9.5.134
Vista64
nvidia 8800gt
What are you specs?
If you hit “d” with the mouse over the mplay window to bring up the Display Options there might be some settings there that might have an affect, but not sure…

I've been experiencing this problem on Vista64 - http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=165338 [3dbuzz.com]
Reading this thread prompted me to give the installing without spaces another try (previously it didn't work - I'm wondering if I accidental left a space in somewhere), and this time around it seems to have worked.
FWIW and if it helps, my specs are:
Vista64
H9.1.244
Intel quad core
nvidia 8800gt 169.25

I just wanted to report that as of H9.1.140 vista ‘appears’ to be working fine for me now - don't know if you guys did anything or if it was an ms tweak or what, but if it was anything you did cheers.
OT: If anyone's interested in my saga I spent the last weeks in linux (ubuntu) after deciding to give that a try again, but my sore eye problem resurfaced. I had installed nvidia drivers with envy and also installed a bunch of fonts but all to no avail. Houdini itself wasn't as hard on my eyes as the rest of ubuntu was though - I use a dark colour scheme for H so maybe that played a part(??). If it weren't for this retched problem I'd love to be using Houdini under linux permanently - my graphics card (8800gt) felt like lightning compared to vista.
Incidentally, under vista my wacom has now stopped working for no reason and ZBrush has decided to lock me out stating that I need to get a new serial number. Oh the joy…

JoeJust to sidetrack this thread momentarily ops:: Not knowing much about programming, do any of the new SSE4 instructions on Intel's new chips lend themselves to Houdini / Mantra, and if so, are any of them already in use (or plan to be soon)?
…and it does a bunch of SSE/MMX stuff automatically too.
I read that divx, which has been optimised for SSE4, got something like a 45% boost over SSE2. Not saying divx and Houdini / Mantra are doing the same thing programmatically, but it is intriguing to fantasise about the potential Houdini could also benefit by - even if it's by not quite as much as that.

Could this recent change be having an effect?
Wednesday, January 9, 2008
Houdini 9.1.118: A minor change was made to the VEX optimizer. In theory, this should have minimal effect on existing shaders (other than to make some of them run faster). If there are unexpected side effects, the optimization can be turned off by setting the environment variable HOUDINI_DISABLE_UNSAFE_VEX.

Yeah, I've had a few updates. I guess that's the culprit then.
I'm tempted to try my luck again with Linux, but only wish to do so as a last resort (Previously, every attempt to use Linux has ended in me having extremely sore eyes for weeks afterwards. The final occasion I even went for an eye exam thinking I needed glasses, but alas my eyesight was perfect. I must be a freak of nature or something as I'm sure I had everything setup correctly… but maybe it was my hardware and trying again now with a new system will make a difference - I'm just not looking forward to the eye pain if it dosen't).
Thanks for looking into it though.

Hi
I've recently installed Vista 64 on to a new system. I then installed Houdini 9.1.102 xp64 and everything from what I could tell seemed to work well. Then, a few days later I installed an Apprentice HD licence and again from what I could tell everything was fine. Later, I uninstalled 102 and installed the then current build, 9.1.114. Here's where the problems started.
FWIW I re-tried with the previously working 102 and the more recent 116 and the problems were the same as with 114 - so it doesn't appear to be a Houdini build problem (unless it's HD playing-up?), more likely a Vista or an “I'm a Muppet and don't know what I'm doing with a new and unsupported OS” issue - but I cant be sure which.
————————
On installing Houdini I get a Console message stating:
Adding 9.1.116/bin/gfont.exe
Font 9.1.116/bin/gfont.exe is an invalid font (or already installed)
Adding -Sq
Font -Sq is an invalid font (or already installed)
Adding -o
Font -o is an invalid font (or already installed)
Adding CProgram Files/Side Effects Software/Houdini 9.1.116/houdini/fonts/font.index
Font CProgram Files/Side Effects Software/Houdini 9.1.116/houdini/fonts/font.index is an invalid font (or already installed)
Saving font table to: CPROGRA~1/SIDEEF~1/Houdini 9.1.116/houdini/fonts/font.index
After closing the Console Houdini finishes the installation as usual.
————————
Opening a fresh Houdini or a .hip file presents me with an Open Dialogue message stating:
Load failed for 9.1.116/bin/hmaster.exe
No such file or directory
But the file appears to have opened fine.
————————
Creating a Mantra node from the Menu Bar menu gives a Main menu Error Dialogue stating:
An error occurred while executing menu Python script.
Could not open file CPROGRA~1/SIDEEF~1/Houdini
Details:
Could not open file CPROGRA~1/SIDEEF~1/Houdini
No ROP is created.
————————
Rendering a frame range to disk from a Mantra ROP gives a Console message and Houdini: Fatal Error Dialogue, both stating:
FATAL ERROR: Usage: /PROGRA~1/SIDEEF~1/Houdini <title> <pid>
The frames do get rendered to disk though.
————————
Rendering a Mantra ROP from the viewport button gives a Houdini Console message stating:
Ignoring unrecognized image file ‘9.1.116/bin/mplay.exe’
mantra: Could not open imager
I'm presented with a Load Image dialogue and an MPlay window. No rendering happens.
————————
All of the above happens with a clean houdini9.1 dir and with the firewall disabled. The rendering problems were tested with a basic scene consiting of a box, cam and light. I realise that Vista is unsupported, but if anyone has any clues as to what's going on based on the info I've given, I'd be grateful to hear them.
Cheers :?

Selecting Delete from the shelf gives a Blast sop (when working on geometry). This corresponds to hitting Tab in the viewer pane and typing delete and choosing the “Delete (Modify)” option - the “modify” is referring to the Modify tab on the shelf (which in the sop context produces a Blast sop). The other option you see next to it is the “Delete (Attribute)” which is the Delete sop you want and corresponds to the Delete in the Attribute sub-menu of the Tab menu. Confused?
If you want to have the delete sop placed in the shelf you can put it there manually. Perhaps there's an easier more correct way, but what worked for me was to drag and drop a delete sop from the network editor on to the shelf. When invoked, this will now place a delete sop into the network, but it wont wire it in, so:
- RMB on your new shelf tool icon and choose “Edit Tool”.
- in the Options tab change the name to something like DeleteSop so you can more easily differentiate it amongst the myriad of other deletes
- in the Script tab clear-out everything and copy and paste a couple of lines from the original Delete shelf tool's script, namely:
import soptoolutils
soptoolutils.genericTool(kwargs, ‘delete’)
Notice here the “blast” gets changed to “delete” and it'll now give you what you want - the delete sop, which is also correctly wired into the network.
It'd be cool if the script could be edited in such away that when pressing say the Alt key while choosing the (original) Delete tool in the shelf it would give you a delete sop and not a blast sop - not sure if that functionality is there though… maybe it is?

I get it too… I believe the intended behaviour is that the mouse turns red when it's hovered over a node input / output, but after a little use it seems always to be stuck on red.
I noticed there was a recent journal entry purporting to fix the sticking issue - but I think some entries have been removed from the journals as I cant seem to find it now.

Feel free to share. (Or at least just the changes.) I like seeing other people's variations, since I'm kinda exhausted of twekaing it.
Very minor changes really - it's almost %100 still your theme.

Cheers Woolfwood - I've also added a few minor tweaks of my own to your second offering… I'm loving it, very retro.
WolfwoodIndeed, to my eye, these Dark themes make Houdini stand out as the ‘prettiest’ looking app out there - not so important really, but could reel in a few more punters for next to no effort. What's the time scale for 9.1 anyway?
@SESI, you folks are more than welcome to grab one of these and add it to a future release of Houdini.

I get these bad fonts too, but only when activating an image map in a shader (no crash needed). I submitted a bug, but no joy - which leads me to believe it's my now ancient Quadro4. The latest drivers that nvidia recommend are 91.36 and they've not been updated in well over a year.
I wonder if the Geforce4 drivers have been similarly neglected - if so this adds more weight to it being the driver to blame (assuming your bad fonts prob and mine are in anyway related).

OndrejThat's good to know indeed.
The other option is to go to the Operator menu in the viewer pane and change “Show Display Operator” to “Show Current Operator”, and then you'll just need to click on the node in the network editor without having to move the display flag.
I've just bound these options to a couple of hot keys, but I'd prefer it if I could use just the one hot key as a toggle instead - is this possible?
