i ran out of time and the hda i send in was without help and icon.
I also did not send in the HDA that was modified for UE (i forgot).

Jalousie or Venetian Blind HDA
This is a fully procedural modelled and fully functional venetian blind hda.
functions:
open, close and tilt
I have also experimented with handles to adjust the width in UnrealEngine as you can see in the short clip.
procedural modelling all this can be adjusted:
number of slats (length of blind)
position of the strings
width of the blind
etc.
concept:
This HDA creates all parts packed, with orient attributes, so you can easily replace them with custom objects the way you want them modelled. Be it for a rbd destruction or a low poly game asset. To instance millions of slats. Or for a funky mograf effect.
The main use case is maybe archviz, but i think games like “Hitman” or “Cyberpunk2077” for example could also do with venetian blinds. And obviously venetian blinds also blow up nicely! And they drop nice shadows.
OUTLOOK:
I plan to “sell” this in the UE Marketplace…

I just set the category to as it is not about aesthetics and apparently game assets are judged on that.

Hi Forum,
something i did a looong while ago.
It needs an update to make it properly work in Unreal again.
This is WIP and cleaning up stuff one did ages ago is "fun"...
I will post the WIP HDA in a few days.
Comments are welcome.

But to create a curve the ‘handles’ are required.
Also, it's rare that anyone, no matter what program they use, to get the desired curve with the initial lay down.
There has to be some moving of the anchor points and/or handle points to get the final curve one is satisfied with.
Sure editing and adjustments to the curve should be possible and should be easy and intuitive…
I will record a tutorial to show how i go about it in different scenarios. Will be published early next year.

@BabaJ
I am actually not talking about editing bezier curves with the “handles”.
I was talking about creating curves (also bezier but also poly) in general.
@all
I was serious about wanting to know what kind of curves/profiles you want to create/draw and struggle to do so in houdini.
Please, please send me examples. Is it more technical or more organic? Is it floor plans? Or logos typo? Or profiles? 2D or 3D?
Please give me a challenge!
I am currently working on a font/curve optimization tutorial. see screenshot: top is the input and below is the optimized version.

Hi ,
i am planning to do a tutorial about curve / drawing and construction. I would love some tricky real world tasks to solve.
So please send me describtions and or drawings of curves that you struggle to create/paint in Houdini.
thanks

Hi Kessel,
houdini even has a build in compositing software. And no need for a third party renderer as houdini comes with mantra (and soon in H18 with another one).
You can do nice stuff with houdini without too much knowledge. But to do what you want to do, will require a lot of learning in any software.
And yes houdini indie is a very cool offer.
And you can start learing with apprentice that is for free. Just have a go!
greetings

you cant export from apprentice.
you need at least an indie licence.
And within houdini game tools there are several tools that help with exporting stuff to game engines. So in principal yes.

Hi,
what are you actually trying to achieve?
If it is a distortion of the pattern you might want to look at stretching/distorting the UVs.

Technical Discussion » Voronoi fracture results in poor quality geo

PS
the pighead has almost no planar faces
setting the Non-planar polygons value to a small value will not leave many faces untriangulated.
So voronoi fracture actually does quite a good job…
for the pighead i get almost 100% non planar at 0.001
for a torus i get 0% at 0.000001
