Thanks mzigaib! It's interesting that both solutions here work. I imagine what you suggested is probably the right way to do this.
I guess this means that to correctly render something with lights, all the geometry needs normals (And they are not calculated on the fly by the render if missing). Does this mean that the renderer is allowed to just do whatever it wants if there's no vertex normals? Like undefined behavior?
I wonder why the solution I came up with (increasing the poly count on the box), also seems to work.

I've been working out these issues with shadowing in my project for a couple weeks now (an hour a day or so)…
I just realized that if I increase the Axis Divisions on my Box geometry from the default 2, to a much larger number that the shadow becomes more and more correct. This explains why the grid received correct shadowing because the default divisions/polycount is very high.
Does anyone know why this happens? Why does the surface not shadow correctly unless it has a high poly count?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can share their expertise on this.

Trying to figure out why Houdini/Mantra shows incorrect looking results for the shadow of 1 object onto a box, but shows correct looking results for shadows onto a ‘grid’.
I have boiled down my problem to a sample scene which reproduces my problem with a little shader ball geometry and a spotlight pointing at it.
For the spot light i'm using the default shadow type: Ray-Traced Shadows, and have my shadow mask set to *.
Does anyone have any idea?

Technical Discussion » Object rendering as black in viewport when first opening houdini scene

It seems like Houdini is rendering one of my objects as entirely black in the viewport. The ‘issue’ resolves itself if I simply set the display flag on the 2nd to last sop (polyknit1 in my image) within that object, then switch it back to the last sop (what it was originally, on polyknit2). My viewport mode is ‘Flat wire shaded’.
Is this a bug, or a feature? This seems to happen every time I open this scene.
Images and scene attached.

Technical Discussion » Can you share a single indie license across 2 computers/clients?

Hello!
I'm a hobbyist using Houdini and am considering buying 1 indie license, but have a question about how license server works.
I have 2 computers at my house, my big workstation and a laptop that I occasionally use. My understanding after reading the license management FAQ is that I can install the license server on 1 computer and then I will be able to ‘check out’ the license from either of my computers on my network (of course, using Houdini only on 1 computer at a time) and release the license back to the license server automatically when the Houdini application closes.
I see in the FAQ that there is a question ‘How do I move licenses to a different License Server?’ that says I can only ‘return’ a license 2 times. What does ‘return’ here mean? Is this only referring to the case where I want to re-install license server, or will this block me from using Houdini interchangeably between my laptop and workstation?
The FAQ I'm reading: https://www.sidefx.com/faq/license-management/#how-do-i-return-my-licenses [sidefx.com]
I was unsure whether the indie license can use a license server at all, but this document says I can:
https://www.sidefx.com/faq/apprentice-local-licensing/ [sidefx.com]
“For Commercial licenses, the sesinetd licensing mode is mandatory, but it can also be used for Apprentice and Indie.”
Thanks a lot!

I just finished John Moncrieft's “Introduction to Houdini 15” on Pluralsight/DigitalTutors and I agree, it was excellent!

This bug doesn't seem to repro for me anymore. I will post an update with houdini console logs if it repros again!

Being able to open the docs through houdini with F1 is very useful, unfortunately it seems to only work the first time after I launch Houdini. Every time after, the web page load just hangs.
It seems to load a page in the browser @ 127.0.0.1:48626, but it just hangs.
I have tried using an external browser as well by setting the HOUDINI_EXTERNAL_HELP_BROWSER=1 environment variable. This does not resolve the issue (the issue is with the local webserver that houdini seems to be running).
Is there a way to fix this? It would be unfortunate if I would have to instead google for all the docs instead of using this nice feature of jumping to docs within houdini.
