ragupasta
VFX is a lot wider than simply “VFX means integrated CG in live action footage”. Visual effects reside in many mediums. Look at Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. That is not a live action film, yet it is rammed full of visual effects (from what Ive seen on the trailer, not managed to see it yet ).

Wrong, Visual Effects are computer generated imagery that can be pass as a real action incorporated into live footage or totatly replaced.

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is an animated movie, not a vfx movie.

thanks actor, i will look at the file and see where is the mistake, if there is one or is just a bug.

EDIT: well, yes, i just found that you have to click in RBDFracturedObject or RBDGlueObject to make it work, but if you click in just the RBDObject as the video does it…………it doesn't work :?

About the chrome material, i've been playing with reflection maps and you can get the same result as the video, apparently older versions assigned a defaul enviroment material but not in recent ones (9.1.244), not sure. I will have to read “changes from previous versions” more often

got it, but i don't fully understand it, it only works if i'm inside the AutoDopNetwork but not if i'm on obj mode, i mean in scene mode, but maybe it could be because i'm not totally aware of Houdini yet, have to look at it more carefully, the thing is if you follow step by step the video tutorial you can't get the same result anymore ?? or i made that mistake ??
Anyway, thank you for you time, i have to play a little bit more

don't know if you solved the problem but i have the same issue with 9.1.244 version, even when following the first video tutorial about the interface, i just cannot make the letters split when they fall down with the dynamics applied, i re-watched the video 5 times and follow step by step and i just can't make it, so i just want to know if something was changed or it is a bug or it is me or something, thanks for any comment on that.

I'm using Houdini Apprentice 9.1.244 version on Fedora 7 32bits if that helps. Thanks.

well, if you see the big picture, he is right, Houdini is targeting the freelancers or hobbiest guys lately with HD, that´s why i downloaded the Apprentice version and see how it works; it is an amazing package to play with, great Particles, awesome Dynamics and a totally new way of Modeling, but when it comes to render the problems start. I have read that Mantra is use in production a lot by big VFX houses, but those houses had lighters TD´s, programmers, etc, etc, that made the workflow better or easy, a Freelancer or Hobbiest simply can´t do that or even worst, the knowledge isn´t enough to undesrtand the way Mantra can work better or for that matter just work. I see his frustration comparing Mantra to Vray because Vray is easy to understand, and you can do scenes that you are satisfied with in a short period of time and that´s what a Freelancer or Hobbiest is looking for (most of the time i think), imagine the felling of working with those great particles and dynamics and then try to render them and not get any satisfied look, well, i think the resul is this kind of post. Just my 2 cents.

(excuse my english)
