Hmm…I must be missing something here. I managed to open the spreadsheet, but I don't understand what those settings are referring to. They don't seem to coincide with the settings contained within any of my pyro or pyrosolver nodes…?
*edit* Ahh…I see now. I was using the Billowy Smoke preset, instead of the Flames preset. I guess the only real difference is the shader that's applied…interesting…

Hmm…ok, so another question. I've decided to break up the 500 frame simulation into two, 250-frame sims.
So far I've cached out the low-res and up res solvers and have them loading in from disk. At obj level, I can scrub around the timeline easily with no problems (even tried closing the file and reopening just to check, and it all works fine).
Following the above-mentioned advice, I added a File node to my AutoDopNetwork, and set it to “Write Files”. When I jump to frame 250, the sim proceeds to cook, and writes out a sim file for every single frame. This isn't the way it's supposed to work, is it? If the low- and up-res solvers are both already cached, why does the network need to re-cook? Shouldn't it just be able to write out a sim file for the specific frame I specify?
Actually, after going back and double-checking, it seems that any time I move the timeline, the network wants to re-cook. If I hit escape, it appears to be reading in the cache files, but there must be something that I've overlooked here. Help…?
I've attached the hipnc file (minus the cache files, obviously), for anyone who'd like to give it a go. Thanks in advance!

Out of curiosity, I'm on an 8-core Intel Xeon Mac at work, running 10.5.5. It's my understanding that this is a 64-bit OS. Is Houdini for Mac a 64-bit app? We've been having issues lately with Maya, being that there's no 64-bit version of it for Mac.

Hah! Good answer. I was just wondering because I wasn't sure if my laptop is capable of running a 64-bit OS. It's got a Core 2 Quad Q9650. From what I understand, all of the Core 2s are 64-bit processors, so I *think* I should be ok…? :? Guess I'll try installing it tonight and see…lol

Good to know. Thanks guys. Out of curiosity, are you guys running the 64- or 32-bit versions of Linux/Houdini?

Ah…never mind. Found my answer. From Dynamics/Optimizing a Simulation:
“You can also break up a large simulation by time. You can run the simulation up to a certain point, and save the entire simulation state to a sim file (using a File dynamics node at the end of the network). Then, you can use the same network to run the second half, but in the Initial state parameter of the DOP Network container node, load the saved midpoint sim file.”

Hi all,
Is there an option in fluids (pyroFX in particular) similar to Maya where I can set the initial state? I've got some pyroFX smoke set up as a simple smokestack with a fan force affecting it. It takes like a good 500 frames or so for it to start looking the way I'd like. In Maya, I'd run the sim out to frame 500, set the initial state, and then cache say 100 or so frames and then render.
I know Houdini's workflow is a bit different…I wasn't able to find anything in the docs regarding this.

Hi all,
So I just bought a new laptop and have been toying around with the idea of making it a dual-boot XP/Linux setup. I'm wondering what you all think is the best flavor of Linux for running Houdini easily and efficiently with.
A buddy of mine in IT said that Ubuntu is probably the easiest to use, so I checked into it a bit. The latest version of Ubuntu is 9.04, but the installer for the latest build of Houdini is for Ubuntu 7.04. Would I be ok running with this setup? Or should I grab the older version of Ubuntu and run Houdini on that? Or a different flavor of Linux altogether? Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for pointing me to that other thread, I think I've got things straightened out now. Though I still can't seem to figure out why, even after caching out both high and low res sims, Houdini still insists on re-cooking the sim if I close the file and then re-open it…? But at least I've gotten this far…baby steps, I guess…lol. :?

Ok, quick question: so I've kept things basic…just added a default sphere for emission, and added the default billowy smoke Pyro FX.
Didn't change any of the settings other than the frame range, and making the simulation box a bit bigger (10/20/10). I can get both the high res and low res to render, but it seems that if I cache them out to disk (and subsequently turn on the Load from Disk checkbox), when I hit render, nothing shows. If I uncheck Load from Disk, the smoke renders. Is this a limitation of the Apprentice version, or is there perhaps something else I'm doing wrong?
I can attach the hipnc file if it'd make it easier…?

Ah, ok then. The hip file's at work. I'll see if I can work something out myself over the weekend, and if I still am having problems, I'll post what I have when I get back to work on Tuesday. Thanks!

I guess this is more of a workflow issue, as I'm not quite sure if I'm going about this correctly.
First off, the details. I'm running Apprentice 10.0.249.5 on OS X 10.5.5. I've been following the PyroFX Tools Tutorial included in the help files, and have run into a bit of a problem. I first ran a low res sim of just a simple billowy smoke container, and got the overall motion looking more or less how I wanted. I baked out the low res sim to disk by going into the “pyrofields” node inside the “lowrespyro” object.
I then hit play to run the sim back to say frame 100 for example, with the low res pyrofields node set to Load from Disk, and density turned on in the visualization options for the uprespyro node inside the AutoDopNetwork. So far so good. I tweak the turbulence settings and what not for the uprespyrosolver node, and get the test renders looking how I want.
Now, I go to repeat the process of cacheing out the sim, only this time (obviously) with the pyrofields node from the uprespyro object. The problem is, once I do this, the high res sim looks totally different. It's as if it's not reading the velocity and density information from the low res solver, and is recalculating everything on its own, which kind of defeats the purpose. I noticed there is a check box for “Use Low Res Source” on the uprespyrosolver node, which is off by default. Turning it on didn't seem to make a difference.
Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?
