week 2, Day 7 : karma material builder!
"Discarded!"
Well Karma material builder is one of the basics, I guess, so there is nothing to comment really.
Except that damn, I had no idea what to do, where to go Too much freedom, I guess.

Week 2 Day 06 : material linker!
"The Thing in the Sub"
At first, I thought Mat Linker would be a bit gimmicky, but it's actually pretty nice. Of course, an old seadog like me is very, very used to old school manual assignation, but hey, anything that makes stuff easier and more intuitive!
While the textures are mostly megascans because I wasn't entirely satisfied with AMD's or GSG's, the sub itself was hand modeled. With few procedural only, I was feeling lazy.

A nice lookdev node, though it's hard to ditch years of having been used to manually editing lights instead.

Hey there,
So in Houdini 19.5 ( and prob older ), after assigning a physical lens shader to a camera, we could access an interactive tilting mode to manage tiltshift directly from the viewport by simpling setting down 3 points.
Apparently, this is gone in H20, maybe forgotten when they added the f-stop and exposure set modes.
Am I missing something, is it maybe hidden ? ^^

Week 2 - Day 4 : Layout!
"The minefield"
aka
"The DeathTrap"
aka
"Morning Surprise"
aka ... Ok you get it.
Layout was a bit painful to use, not gonna lie ; but that's probably because I chose to use the combo with Edit in physics mode. Add to study the extra mile to find how to add an actual simProxy mesh to the assets. Legos pieces were made with a quick procedural setup and I just made myself a few length variations. With more time, I'd have made tubes or cones or whatever.
Also, material variations to the rescue, ahoy!

Week 01 - Day 03 : Scatter and Align!
I found the "mushroom" challenge amusing, so here is my take : the alien planet !
Stay safe and always be careful about mushrooms, folks.
Everything modeled in houdini, with scatter and align (red nodes ) used a bit everywhere. I wanted to go the scatter ON scatter route, but meh.

edit : thanks, model Sofia from sidefx, for giving your body to the cause, your sacrifice will be remembered!
edit2 : better network screenshot, given that I actually had one more hour than I thought

Hello Robert and all involved parties from sidefx! Nice to see you all returning participants, and greetings, new people!
Robert, the greyscalegorilla+ library is a welcome addition to the challenge this year. I wanted to ask what the rules were about other third party assets providers like megascans or, really, any online marketplaces ? Are they allowed like last year, or do we have to pick among the free assets from GSG+ ?
Cheers and best of luck and fun to all artists !

Hey Robert, the section where you should be able to choose the t-shirt size was blank, except for the label. No fields or multiple choices.
Sadly I had a lapse of judgement and thought maybe there was a second page, so I merrily submitted and am now locked out of providing a screenshot to illustrate the issue.

Aaallright, done aaaand submitted.
Thanks for the organisation, Robert. It was pretty clean this year!
Thanks to the judges for the artwork win ! It does feel nice and warm, indeed. I missed Paul Esteves' vids this year though ,)
Mardini is a nice occasion to let out the inner artist inside, step outside of the usual "button pusher" role that goes on and on all year.
While I answered "Nature" in the form, in truth I couldn't really choose. I liked all weeks, and had to challenge myself to find ideas all along. Shapes started nice and smooth. Motion was a bit compromised by my own failure at meeting the deadlines for Growth and Leap, but I love finding ways to express movement with a single image. Light was probably the hardest, in hindsight. And Worlds, man, I was so tired when we reached that one ^^
Some days I was absolutely at a loss of ideas tho : Smooth, Flow, Bulb, Reflect, Halo, Fantasy !
Obviously I can't say whether I will engage in Mardini 2024 for sure, because life is life. It will boil down, I suppose, on a few parameters. I'd like to, though. Just need to find how to balance out work, sleep, and mardini
Peace,
Olivier

Everything Everywhere All At Once, in a single spreadsheet. How nice!
So the month is over heh? A few final laps for the judges, meanwhile we can rest, at long last!
Again this year, excellent works in the animation department. How you madman can do this is beyond me. The rendertimes, specifically : I only did two animations, but I had to use a renderfarm and the costs ramp up so fast !
Still pictures bring their own challenges - like the whole concept of the motion week, for instance - but it's probably less hectic.
Anyway, let's see what the final results will be!
edit : when the boss says "png", the idiot Wolrajh provides a JPG, naturally.
edit2 : owooops I had apparently deleted the pic entirely :S

Week 5 : Worlds
Day 31 : Scifi !
"One day your children may ask you, 'and you ? Where were you when the robots rose and took over the world?"
or
"Rare picture of an AI and their devoted disciples"
Got a nice robot model from sketchfab, used for the disciples crowd. We barely see their feets, hands and heads but the metallic reflections should do some part of the trick!
I ran into some weiiiird issues with Karma, where all of a sudden, the material on the ground and on the cloth would cause a crash. Apparently came from using color/vector textures on the ground while having some SSS on the cloth, so I elected to discard the normal map and the albedo. Super weird!
Other than that, went pretty well. Just super tired, and lo and behold : now, we can rest !
edit : text, as usual

Day 30 Fantasy
"Beware the sleeping giant in the tall grass.
Nobody remembered who he was, or what happened, but in the Plains, his remains were a beacon, the promise of a safe haven for the night. Many would plow their way to the skull, rest near the fire, discuss and trade with other travelers."
Fantasy is a very, very large topic. One could almost say it pans _every other genre_, except, of course, biopics :p
I went for the giant skeleton and the darker tones of an unsafe world.
edit : ah, yeah, obviously the skeleton is a sketchfab asset.

Day 29 : Rural !
"Just close your eyes and breathe."
Not really a mini-story today, just something more contemplative. A good fit to train some scatterin', I say!
This is a place inspired by where I grew up, southwest France, a veryprimitive rural location loaded with history. To be fair with more time I'd have added a bit more fauna, maybe a construction like a "basic" medieval castle, etc. Or a bridge. There's even a perfect spot for a bridge, now that I actually look at the image
While the trees come from speedtree for yet another older project of mine, everything else is new, from the terrain to every scatter and the mist.
edit : more minitext

Day 28 : Urban
"Lead the change."
Ok, this brings "up" vibes, big time. Would you believe it wasn't the intent ? I just wanted one single colorful balloon in a boring gray city, but there was something missing. More colors! I mean it must be pretty obvious by now I love colors.
So I tried my hand at the Labs building generator, using some of the modular building pieces from the Megascans collection. Pretty frustrating, as the pieces wouldn't align and everything required a manual intervention. My initial plans of doing a "few" procedural buildings this way quickly evaporated

Day 27 : Ancient
"The end is nigh."
I got back to one of the earliest day of the 2022 mardini edition, match size. Back then I did a relatively detailed Aztec /Mayan / Incan pyramid. Now, to respect the mardini spirit, I did not salvage the system and did it from scratch entirely over again, although in a simplified form. In this, the only external element is one of the two tree species used for the scatter, a big kapok I did for ... Another project I never saw to completion. Everything else was done on the fly !

Week 4 : Light
Day 26 : Halo
"Fallen from grace, punished with sin, dreaming of home."
Halo is a terribly difficult theme imho, because it's both super specific and extremely vague. Take this for instance : "halo lumineux" in french will lead you to a page that turns into "skyglow" in english. Sometimes it's specifically a round shape, other times it's a light diffraction phenomenon. It can also be a meteorologic event tied to the sun and moon, or even a religious icon!
So yeah I did a bit of all, added volumetric 'glows' of all kind and an angel halo, dropped the moon in there. Hopefully all bases are covered, ha!
Kitbash buildings and another call to the 3D Scan Store female model - just another pose. Clouds, rains, wings, shading, lighting, and comp ( so much comp ) in Houdini.
