Hi Jean-Luc,
with Apprentice you're not allowed to output .sim files, which are the ones that would allow you to resume simming at any point or give the DOPnet a “initial pose”.
Though if you want to cache out the RESULTS of your sim, it's completely possible, as long as you take your data out of dopnet into sops, and then use a rop output node, or a file node set to write.

I might be mistaken, but ROPs shouldn't be more about transferring data from RAM (or directly from sim) to disk? That's the part that takes time, it's not actually computational intensive. But for example, a large scale pyro can take easily more than 10gb per frame, and regardless of the hard disk's speed that's something that's going to take some time.
Not 1 hr per ROPfram'e as you're experiencing, but if you already cached out the sim, there's no reason why it should take that long. Unless you're like ROPping out the entire scene every frame somehow.

I'd give a go with the Voronoi fracturing.
You can cluster pieces following specific rules so you can basically achieve most quad-based flat shapes with it!
Another method I would try is trying to use cops, create your plane curve, create UVs and then recreate the pattern you're looking for in COPs going crazy with layers of geometric noises and splat it on top of your curve, and use that to create your shapes.
My 2 cents

Up? Would like to see this come back in some form xD
I read on the docs that to make Cloth and FLIP mutually affecting each other, to deal with the changing topology of the FLIP, one should create an attribute called “previous” that's storing the position of the particles in the previous timestep.
I tried to di this with a sop solver in the dopnet, but nothing changed
Any clues, tips or examples? Thanks!

Hey, that looks awesome!!!
Never seen a fish tornado xD
Actually you could do without any flocking techniques.
Easy way, try to setup a POP sim swirling in a tornado and then copystamp fishes/boxes/whatever on top of those? Be sure to use the interact pop so you can give them a radius so they won't intersect.
Ideally you could also use RBD solver just to solve the interpenetration of the fishes.
What point are you stuck in?

Thank you very much
Actually i've finished the Master in CG i was attending.
Partecipated to a contest, and just won 2 months of Internship in Double Negative! I'm so thrilled!

Hi. Sorry for this not being the solution but wanted to step in and join you in this.
I'm Italian, and i have the same exact problem.
Inside Houdini i cannot make backticks or squareBrackets…and copypasting them is, well, really annoying.
Any solutions?
Thx

Hi there, just wanted to share with you my actual first student demo reel.
It's only focused on VFX since that's what i want to do but…well, let's hear some thoughts!
There is actually the MUSIC problem, too heavy for a reel, but i've solved it, will upload the corrected one when the next shot is ready!
C&C MOSTLY welcome
Cheers

Technical Discussion » Paint SOP's in HDA's

Sorry to resume a topic this old, but I'm in need of that
I made a Digital Asset (h10 fyi if that's relevant) which has a Paint SOP at some point. And i need, with a switch, to activate/deactivate the painting operation at the DA level. So, say, i click on the digital asset, there is a slider with “Paint on off”. When set to 1 I'd like to be able to paint on my mesh without going into the DA and click on the paint.
So i made the Paint node editable in the type properties, and added its parameters to the DA interface. But it doesn't work. Since i added the params to the HDA interface, it doesn't work if i use it from inside the DA obviously, since it's referencing the upper parameters.
I'd really like to be able to paint without needing to go inside the digital asset.
Any thought?
Thanks

Hi all
I just installed Houdini Apprentice on my MacbookPro with SnowLeopard (10.6.2 fyi).
Started it, and safari popped up pointing to the local help of houdini. The problem is that it says that it cannot find the server “localhost”.
Help! I'm a newb and i'm lost without the help!
Thanks
Emanuele
(PS: i just reinstalled a fresh copy of snow leo, before i also had the same version and it worked!)
