Technical Discussion » what is up with normals in for loops?

I'm looping over each primitive and the values I calculate are altered (signs changed) at the end of the for loop. I'm showing the normal in this example.

@N = @N; is the only thing in the attrib wrangle. Why is it different? And how can I keep the value?

Nevermind! It appears to break down at higher resolutions…so…I don't really know what the problem is (still) but I don't think it's Houdini.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Hi, I think I've narrowed down a problem I'm having between these two settings: polygon and polygon mesh.
I'm exporting the face orientations to CSV file and loading them up in UE4. For some reason, whenever the type is Polygon, the orientations are messed up. When I switch to Polygon Mesh, everything works fine.

I had a look at the HoudiniCSV.cpp file for supported fields:
P, Px, X, pos
N, Nx
T, time
#, id
alive
life
Cd, color
alpha, A
v, Vx
type
impulse
And proceeded to export a cube with A (alpha) attrib to it. But the resulting CSV has no A field:
#,P
0,“(0.5, -0.5, 0.5)”
1,“(-0.5, -0.5, 0.5)”
2,“(0.5, 0.5, 0.5)”
3,“(-0.5, 0.5, 0.5)”
4,“(-0.5, -0.5, -0.5)”
5,“(0.5, -0.5, -0.5)”
6,“(-0.5, 0.5, -0.5)”
7,“(0.5, 0.5, -0.5)”
I probably haven't done something obvious. Forgive me, I'm picking up Houdini again after a long hiatus, so I'm kind of rusty.
Update: Yep! I forgot to update the export node in the csv rop. *facepalm* Working now.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » n00b modeling - smooth edges of a polygon?

I was wondering how (if) it's possible to smooth the edges of a polygon to make it more curve like? I manually pushed points to achieve the existing curve, but I was wondering if it's possible to smooth it *without* pushing more verts around manually.

I blasted the face and then applied a PolyFill to it using QuadrilateralGrid. Not bad.

For export to games, you should avoid long thin triangles. After a polyreduce (for triangulation), I end up with long thin triangles and bad topology. Is there an easy way to fix this?

So I was watching the Model video on the fusion 360 site [help.autodesk.com]. I like how they take a 2d shape and extrude it, so I thought I'd try something similar in Houdini. The circles are easy enough, but I'm stuck on the outline and how it would connect to the circles. I've seen procedural tank treads do something similar…ideas welcome!

Nevermind. Saving it out to Filecache did the trick. Also, they don't show up in a render, just the viewport.

I have some popgrains coming out of a popnet. And for each point, I copied a sphere to it. However, I can still see the original point form the popnet. How can I disable the rendering of points coming out of a popnet?

Entagma has a cool video called Packing the Torus [vimeo.com]. I've done up to the 14-min mark but I can't seem to get the particles to stick to the surface. I've checked and double-checked the settings in the video against my project, but the particles keep flying off the surface.

Technical Discussion » python node force cook every frame?

Thanks for the response. However, it's not really the direction I'm looking to go.
My original intent was to accumulate an arbitrary value over frames, much like @Frame or @Time. I banged my head with detail once and timeshift until I realized everything I was doing was effectively constant (unchanged). The same graph is evaluated every frame, so all the same values are calculated every frame, and nothing carries over. At least, that's my current mental model.
My next thought was to flush those values to disk, to persist them between frames. And that's where I am. I'm new to Houdini, and probably abusing it, so any advice is appreciated.

This works only when I middle-click the python node (forcing it to cook?). I was expecting it to append the frame number to file as I scrubbed the timeline…
