SWestnot to derail this topic, but watch Colossus, the Forbin Project. it came out in 1970d3dworld
in my personal opinion i dont wish for AI to evolove that much , it must be limited to some extent , never a bot will replace artists and their long learning journey ,its just unfair
Well I hear you. It is a scary thought and in probably 10 or 20 years we will know how much humanity will allow this new syntheric organism to take over. Unfortunately history has show that humanity learn its lessons after things go to far. So I’m expecting the actual ”rise of the machines” and then the collapse will come and we start over again with a new lesson.
The thing with self-learning technology is that there is probably no limit. It is a machine made to keep redefining the data. It is an illusion of a living organism just like an actor is playing a role to be alive. It seems alive but it is just data and an algorithm.
Anyway, although technology can evolve fast it is we as humans that can be stubborn, slow down or limit those things. We need to recognize that it is in the interest of corporations and capitalism that machine learning should take over more and more market shares. Humanity will need to ask itself what kind of life do we want for ourselves and our children?
Anyway, enjoy your life as it is as long you can.
Cheers!

chf"later this year" is a subjective term, it could be 3 weeks or 3 months from now.
in the Karma XPU: A Houdini 20 Preview by Brian Sharpe @ SIGGRAPH HIVE 2023 he said
"we'll be releasing version one gold (of Karma XPU) and Houdini 20 later this year"

it would be best to contact support, I've done this and I believe you have to return the license then reinstall but I've forgotten exact procedure. it is always best to return license first then reinstall OS.

Quelltroiyes, I received and email from VizRT stating they had purchased Lightwave now "if" anything comes of it we shall see
Lightwave is emerging from the ashes of hieroglyphics and visions. It would be interesting to pull some GalacticA pursuits into the Houdini Bar.

ajz3dso you would be Waiting for Godot? FACE PALM
Godot Engine is becoming very popular, and is probably one of the most widely used game engines, especially by independent developers. Would it be unrealistic to wish for Houdini Engine for Godot to become available, perhaps not in H20, but in one of the next major Houdini versions? Is this being considered in SideFX's long-term plans?

Side Effects support added this for not keeping the env file in one drive.

never mind. Side Effects support had me send the Houdini info. somehow when I installed it, it ended up on my one drive. now to see if I can move it without having to reinstall Houdini.
I had to go into Microsoft environment variables and add a link pointing Houdini to my C drive/user/documents

thats what I thought in Houdini 19.5 base folder, but all that is there are three files:
houdini_setup.
houdini_setup_bash
houdini_setup_csh
the _csh kinda looks like the correct one.
as I said I did a search in folder Houdini19.5 for:
houdini.env
*.env
and it came up with no file found.
houdini_setup.
houdini_setup_bash
houdini_setup_csh
the _csh kinda looks like the correct one.

I was looking for houdini.env file in H19.5 but cannot find it even with a folder search in windows. I know it was there in previous versions. did it get a name change?
what I am after is to edit it so I can reduce number of "recent" files and editing the env file to HOUDINI_MAX_FILE_HISTORY = X (X is how many you want)

ishinarchitectwhich version of Houdini are you using? if it is apprentice then that version does not export to FBX, one of the differences between it and Indie
When I select file>export>Filmbox fbx, the Fbx Export option screen does not appear. Why? This does not allow me to export Houdini to a FBX file.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » how do you export a hard surface model into photoshop

Island
Substance painter is $150 on steam for a permanent license. It is much better than photoshop for organic models. There are other free alternatives but I've found them buggy.
For hard surface models, photoshop alone might work. You need to create uv's in Houdini, generally with a uv flatten node and seams. You might want to add a uvlayout or uvedit node to fix rotations to make painting easier. Use the layout in photoshop as a template (generally setting it to multiply mode on a separate layer). After you paint the texture, turn off or delete the template layer and save the photoshop file as jpg, tiff, or whatever. Use this image as a texture in a principled shader in Houdini and assign it to your model. It is old school but often works.
How can steam offer Substance Painter perpetual license for $150 when Adobe wants $20 a month?

EVargasI really appreciate this.it may fit the bill perfectly.
I believe it would fit your needs, because Apprentice can import/export OBJ right? (see "FILE FORMATS" here https://www.sidefx.com/products/compare/ [www.sidefx.com]).
So you would export the OBJ geometry UV mapped from Houdini, import it into 3DCT to paint over UVs (paint across seams ok), then export the image textures to disk (there are multiple export presets available and you can customize too).
Back on Houdini you just have to load the image textures on your shader channels (diffuse, normal, etc..., depending on your render engine).

EVargaswhat file formats from Houdini into Textura? can you use Apprentice with Textura?
Also, if you don't want Blender, there are other options too, me I use 3DCoatTextura, it's paid but have flexible options (permanent, subscription, rent).

how do you or is there a way to export a hard surface model made in Houdini into Photoshop for texturing UVs then back into Houdini?
I guess what I am asking is can photoshop be used to paint on UVs instead of using Substance Painter which is another $49 a month for the package
