No need to sell me on Houdini, I'm already sold. Just started last week playing with the apprentice.
I'm sick of Autodesk and it's own crazy policy and customer relationship. Gladly, I never bought AD software, I just used the student version or the commercial version at a prod. company.
I just need to decide what would be the perfect companion to Houdini. C4D or Modo.
Freelance wise, I need to be able to make some logo-thing now and then.

From the FX artists I've talked to, all have the same idea, that Houdini is an amazing tool, but that, for a single artist, with 3ds Max and Plugins you'll get the job done faster.
It's a tool that let you create FX faster, with lower turn-around. Houdini is more powerful, you have more control, but you take longer to get the job done.
Again, that's the input I got from some top guys working in FX for large studios. I asked some this because of the launch of Houdini Indie.
In any case, I'll teach myself Houdini because Indie is so freaking cool.
Cheers.

But in the end, they're just tools. Find one that suits you, experiement with any and all to find what works best.
Yeah. I love FX, so actually Houdini would be my “toy” for creating destruction, fire, smoke and this crazy things. Probably would be using the Apprentice HD version for some time.
Now … I never got Modo really. I love it's interface, but never liked the “way of work” of it. Perhaps I should try it again.

Well, sorry to intrude in the discussion.
I'm also thinking of not going the Maya route, but instead of Modo, I'm actually thinking of going to C4D + Houdini. For now, price is not that important (I have a student license of C4D valid for 3 years which will give me a nice discount on the commercial license. More expensive than Modo, but not so much). And thankfully, there's Houdini apprentice for all my FX dreams.
I actually was learning Maya for FX (SimplyMaya has some nice fluid tuts) and there's VFXLearning with some cool stuff also. But I'm just mad about AD and looking somewhere else.
So … talked to much already. Do you guys have used/tried C4D as a companion to Houdini?
P.S.: If I should create another thread, please let me know. I just thought to drop this here since there's some nice individuals talking about FX and some cool stuff.

Hello guys …
Actually I'm a Max user (heresy! burn him!) that was studying Softimage to make a switch. I had plans of learning Houdini later as I want to be an FX TD. Guess Autodesk pushed me to start learning Houdini faster.
I'll continue using Max (as V-Ray and FumeFX are too cool to just drop), but my idea is to become so comfortable with Houdini that Pyro will be my new FumeFX and Mantra will be my new V-Ray.
P.S.: I was thinking of buying the Houdini Fundamentals training from cmiVFX. Is it worth it?
Cheers.

I've transitioned from Soft about a year ago. Fully commercial version too. I'm teaching, so in the educational realm. I've stopped teaching anything in Soft completely, and gone deep down the rabbit hole in Houdini. The animation system is awesome, particle and DOP system is very much like ICE, (especially the VOP system), and the only thing that really needs some help is the modeling system. I don't think it's anything the Houdini folks aren't aware of, but specific details about what we feel is missing would be fantastic. If I get together some specific details about the things I miss, I'll post them up. In the meantime, I'm adding some character modeling videos to CMIVFX library, to augment my earlier Softimage titles. We are working hard to add some “Softimage to Houdini” titles to our site very soon.
It makes a lot more sense to transition from Soft to Houdini than to Maya, or Max. Max makes absolutely no sense, IMHO. It's very old code, and feels like it's on its last leg. Softimage was beautifully multithreaded and amazingly fast.
Amen to that.

They've take the site down … but here is a quote.
SideFX, please, please, make some adjustments in the animation sector so all of us ex-Softimage users can run here. I don't want to ever give a dime to Autodesk in my life.

Autodesk Softimage’s retirement: what you need to know
Autodesk have just announced that they will be retiring Softimage over the next couple of years. The good news is that it’ll be going out with a bang, with a final version slated for release in 2015.
So why kill off Softimage? Well, Autodesk already have two insanely popular, industry standard 3D software products on their books – 3ds Max and Maya – and want to concentrate all their efforts on those, and start adding Softimage’s functionality into the Entertainment Creation Suites. So it’s not a proper goodbye, more like ‘see you around’.
What do I do now?
Anyone with Softimage and a current subscription will be able to migrate to a bundle of Softimage 2015 and 3ds Max or Maya free of charge to ease their transition over the next two year period. After that time, you’ll simply be migrated to the most up to date version of 3ds Max or Maya. The transition isn’t compulsory though, and there are a few things that current Softimage users can do.
Softimage customers looking to expand their user base in the short term can buy a bundle of Softimage with Max or Maya for £3900. There’s also a rental licence available too, which you can pay for either on a perpetual or quarterly basis.
How about Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suites?
Now for Autodesk’s Entertainment Creation Suites. For the 2015 releases, there will only be two versions of the suite – Standard and Ultimate. Customers on the Premium suite will be able to transition to the Ultimate, but downgrading to Standard won’t be possible. As only advanced subscriptions are available for the Ultimate suite, it looks like the prices of these will be lowered too.
What about support?
Don’t worry, Autodesk will still have your back covered with support. Subscription customers will continue to receive support for Softimage for two years until April 2016 or until their current subscription contract had run out. Service packs for Softimage are expected to be provided until April 30th 2016, and if you want to remain on subscription for Softimage but not migrate, you can retain your subscription until 30 April 2016.

Houdini Learning Materials » Houdini as generalist tool?

Yes ,Softimage is a really cool tool like Maya and you can start to learn it too !
Just don't forget Softimage is not really complete procedural software like Houdini ,Just ICE is a complete procedural and you can just compare ICE with Houdini's VEX !!!
All of the 3D softwares (Except Houdini !!! ) are really powerful at this time and each one has special feature and facilities , Like :
3D Max : Too many powerful and various Plug-ins and Tutorials like FumeFX
Blender : Free Complete 3D Software and Open - Source
Maya : One of the biggest software in the VFX and Animation industry with really stable core and very very powerful SDK for writing Plug-Ins with C++ and include Really Powerful and easy Scripting languages (MEL - Python) and good compatible with Pixar Renderman
Softimage : Really powerful software in the Rigging , Animation , Rendering with a impressive and special procedural system that's called ICE for creating and customize Motion Graphics and VFX effects and good compatible with Solid Angle Arnold
Cinema4D : One of the best software in the Motion Graphics fields with a really fast and beautiful result rendering engine in this field
HOUDINI : Biggest complete procedural software in the world !!!
So I believe that a user's ability and knowledge is important than softwares or at least 50% , 50%
If you wanna learn Houdini along side another software ,Because Houdini is complete procedural software you don't need another procedural software !
So I suggest to you that learn Maya (Maybe you can find a job easier than Softimage)
*** This is my personal idea and maybe this is wrong *** :?
No problem. I asked for your input and I appreciate the answer! 8)

Hey people … I started the thread and went away, sorry about that.
Joker386, thanks for the reply. Very well thought out. Now … since you are a Maya guy also and uses it mostly for modeling, that means I could change Maya for Softimage and be ok?
I say that because Softimage is kind of Houdini procedural also, it's good for motion graphics and has the plethora of render engines that Maya has. Maybe it'll be harder to find jobs … but what the hell.

Hey guys, I would like to ask you something …
How is it Houdini as a generalist tool? I've been seeing some amazing work at motion graphics, animation, etc, and even some cool training.
People say that only modeling is average, but if I bundle it with something like Silo or other cheap but good modeler, what you guys think?
