I can confirm that this works. Many thanks Rob (special thanks also to Jason and crew for discovering!)

Hi Rob.
This is still absolutely killing us here at ETC. To echo Jason, the flickery-ness of the fix was deemed to be worse that than the issue itself by the artists here (myself included).
Any update regarding this? Our move to Rocky has been delayed by Autodesk (*rolls eyes*) so unfortunately we are stuck with this a while longer.
Thanks.

19.5 is out and this issue remains to be a huge pain for our studio.
I submitted a bug report shortly after my first post and was told there was an existing ticket (#118701).
It's very disappointing to see this issue persist, especially when it appears to be a regression that has been addressed at least twice in the past!

It's really frustrating. Seems to be a regression that happens with each major release since H18.

This issue has returned in H19 (every build I've tried up to and including 19.0.622)
Is anyone else experiencing this?
KDE
CentOS Linux release 7.9.2009 (Core)
3.10.0-1160.15.2.el7.x86_64

OK, successfully extracted on the seventh attempt.
My guess is that until now I was walking away from the download (baby now asleep… ) and somehow the screen lock was breaking the download, causing Chrome to abort but think it succeeded, creating a file of the same size in the process.
It would be great if you guys could post some flavour of hash code alongside downloads. A link that would facilitate the use of download accelerators would also be nice, although I appreciate that would probably mess with your user statistics gathering.
Sorry for the noise.
Dan.

Can anyone out there confirm that they have been able to download and extract the latest production build for Ubuntu. I have downloaded it at least five times now and am unable to extract it - it gives me this error:
gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
I have downloaded it over wifi, then I tried it over ethernet, then through a vpn (I'm in Turkey - you never know…), everything. Same result everytime…
Could someone who has successfully downloaded it please paste an md5sum here so I can check my sanity.
Many thanks,
Dan.

Your preferences are stored in your home directory ($HOME) in the houdini13.0 directory (or houdiniX.X, depending on the version), so you should be able to copy that to a USB stick and tote it around with you.
Thanks twod!

Let me simplify my question without all the fluff
How can I setup Houdini just the way I like it, take all those customizations and settings, copy them to a USB stick (for example) and use them when I launch Houdini on another machine somewhere entirely different - different machine, network, city, country, continent…
With Softimage I can take my Softimage user folder and copy it to a USB stick. I can then create a symlink at, for example: cdan_USB/dan_user_folder that links to the folder on the USB stick. I then launch Softimage using my own launcher that sets the pertinent environment variables relating to the user home location and I have all my keymapping and other settings wherever I go. I'm still launching the locally installed Softimage but it's using my portable preferences and settings.
Hope that's clearer.

Apologies if this is obvious, but I had a good crack on Google before posting.
When working with Softimage, I like to launch it using a my own launcher that calls my own preferences that sit on a location of my choosing (one that stays constant wherever I am working using a symlink).
What files, folders or environment variables would I have to copy/set to have truly portable preferences with Houdini? so I could launch it on a different machine and have it exactly the way I want it, wherever I am.
Again, apologies if it's obvious (or indeed if this post in general makes no sense whatsoever).
Also, would there be issues launching commercial and non-commercial versions with the same prefs? (same version number, obviously)
Thanks.

Hi Jordi,
Just wanted to add my thanks for this initiative!
If I could make one suggestion, perhaps there is an order that you feel these should be read, in which case adding some kind of numbering to the PDF names might be beneficial.
Not a biggie, the names themselves give you an idea of a logical order, but just thought I'd mention it.
