Houdini Learning Materials » How can I restart a pyro sim from the last .sim file?

Would that work if I were caching from a dynamics node in the OUT context? …using HQueue?

Apparently I was doing it wrong. I haven't tried it the right way yet, but someone from SESI replied to my question about this. They said that in Houdini “../” means “up one directory from $HIP”, so
$HIP/../
yields $HIP/$HIP/../
I hope that helps anyone else facing this situation.

Yes, we are on Windows for this project. I am waiting on a linux machine I ordered for home. Bye bye Windows (mostly)!
I think I will also adjust my folder structure and see if that fixes the problem.

I have not submitted the bug. I don't know how to do that. Do you think it's the moving up a dir (“../”) that's causing the problem? I can avoid that - no biggy there. I'm just glad to know I'm not going crazy!

Here is a screen grab. On the right is the path I want to use. Note the bright red text. That floating window is what I see when I open the file dialog to the right of the “Geometry File” text field.

I guess I didn't explain the problem clearly. I am not putting $HIP in my file paths twice. That would be silly. Houdini seems to be doing it on it's own. I think it's a bug.
I saw one other thread where someone else was experiencing the same issue. Check out the third post in this thred. He says he's seeing a “a double path”. I'm having the same issue:

I'm using $HIP in paths in Houdini - to output renders, and to point at intial states. It has suddenly stopped working. When I open the file browser, at the top, in red, is the path that is typed in the text field in the main UI, except that the “$HIP…” at the beginning is repalced with “$HIP/$HIP/…”
This is a rel showstopper for me at this point. I need to use $HIP because I'm using HQueue on a network.
Anyone have a work-around?

How can I restart a pyro sim from where it was stopped? I have .sim files, and I've read it's possible, but how? I'm using a dynamics node in the out context to start the simulation. I'm reading it in using the checkbox at the top of the pyro_sim node in the object level.

Yep, and if that doesn't work, click on the parameter label and tab through again. This toggles the parameter's evaluation mode.
That got it. I thought it was some kind of feature I didn't know about. I guess it's just a bug in the UI.
thanks all!

I've got an attribCreate with an expression in the first value box. I've clicked on the “value” name a couple times. Now the first box has extended across the parameter pane, and I can't see the other greyed out boxes to the right of the first one. No biggy in this case, but it seems to happen in situations where I actually have meaningful values in those other slots. I know this is just some silly UI trick that I don't know yet. Can someone pls help?
thx

At 4:37 in the turtorial video, when trying to make a colorMix node, I get “invalid node type name”. I'm a noob, but I think I followed along to that point pretty closely. I'm using houdini 12.0.581 apprentice.
How can I successfully create a color mix node?
thanks

OK - Bonus question: Now the bottle shows up in the AOV's. Is there another check box somehwere I can hit to remove the bottle from the depth pass, the normals pass, etc.?

HI - I'm rendering a flip fluid cache, with the “v” output correctly. I am seeing some MB, but I'd like to crank it up. In Maya there are options for shutter open/shutter close, etc.
Is there an easy way for me to gain up that “v” velocity vector before it gets used for MB? Is there a better approach?
I know I can do “v*1.4” or whatever when I'm writing out the sim, but I'd rather not re-sim every time I want to noodle the MB.
thanks.

Hi - I'm trying to render some water on an opaque bottle. I have the live-action plate of the bottle projected as a texture onto the bottle geometrry. The bottle's render tab has “phantom” checked. So, that works great - the water refracts the bottle, as it is in the live action plate.
But, when the water goes behind the bottle, it is not matted out correctly. What is the simplest way to get my water to refract and reflect the bottle, and also respect the bottle as a hold-out object?
thanks
