Thank you very much for your reply ouroboros, do you mean not using “gasresizefluiddynamic” node? I will try that out.
Technical Discussion » Volume retime strobing or stuttering problem

Hello. I have been trying to retime a volume to about a .25 speed using the new retime sop for Houdini 17. I am sure the volume has the vel information but still I get a flickering result, kind of a strobing or stuttering feeling. I am using the advection method but I have tryied many combinations of parameters without any succes, any ideas on how to use the retime node to get usable results?
Thanks in advanced.

Technical Discussion » Object instance - randomize instance parameters

Hello, I am having trouble randomizing parameters from instanced geometry from within an “instance” subnet. Say for example I wanted to randomize the speed of an instance's animation (on the sop “timeWarp” node), or the start frame of the instance's animation (on the sop “timeShift” node), or perhaps randomize it's material.
Please check attached file.

Technical Discussion » RBD Houdini to Maya (Arnold) workflow

Hello everyone, I am currently having some trouble exporting my RBD simulations from Houdini to Maya, rendering with Arnold. Namely with UVs and motion blur. Although I have uv and v attributes, none of them transfer correctly, uvs are lost and motion blur looks streaky in some frames. I recall having no problem with voronoi fractures but this time I am using booleans to generate the fractured pieces.
I have tried using both .ass files and alembics with no luck.
I am curious to hear about your workflows.
Thanks in advanced.
David.

Technical Discussion » Audio formats and settings allowed in Houdini

Hello all. I am trying to drive some effects based on audio amplitude, I have never used audio in Houdini before and am having trouble getting the sound in.
I am creating a Chop Network, then I create a file operator and point it to my wav file. The operator is giving me an error: “Unable to read file”
I am using a wav file at 48000 Hz 32 bit stereo, I also tried at 41000 Hz and with a mp3 file with no luck.
can anyone give me some pointers on how to achieve this? I will attach Houdini and wav files as reference, as well as my settings used in Adobe Audition.
Thanks in Advanced.

@Carlo_C: I haven't tried the Principled shader, I will give it a try, thanks.
@robsdesign: I am currently using build 15.02.244.16, I will update and hope to have more luck.
Thanks for the replies guys.

Technical Discussion » REFLECTION ROUGHNESS ISSUE

Hello fellows.
I am new to rendering in Mantra and noticed an issue with the “mantra surface” shader:
When I render with a default mantra surface shader, the reflections are very defined or specular. the reflection “roughness” is set to .3 by default. (see attached image).
The problem is, when I try to make a slightly more diffuse reflection, even by increasing the “roughness” to .3000001, the result is a muuuch more difusse reflection (see other attached image).
So my question is: Is there a way of achieving a middle ground? maybe I am missing something obvious.
Hopefully someone can help me with this issue.
Thanks in advanced!

@reelinspirations: Thanks for the comment! My process was based on a tutorial by Niels Prayer, you can check the tutorial here:
https://vimeo.com/149150596 [vimeo.com]
Basically what I did is offset 2 points for each stem, joined together with a line using the “add” node, then I segmented the line with the “resample” node. I then added some noise with a “Point VOP” and finally generated the mesh with a “wire” node, I used a ramp parameter for the with of the wire to give it the profile shape.
And yes, they are animated, just didn't have the time to render the animation.
Hope this helps, best.
David.

Technical Discussion » Flipbook problem - skipping frames

Hello everybody, I am having a frustrating problem generating flipbooks (please see attached files).
everytime I generate a flipbook, the first few frames flicker as if they where out of order. So for short sequences it becomes useless since I am unable to judge timing of my effects.
Any help fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advanced.
I am using Houdini Indie on windows 7 with an NVidia GTX and latest drivers.
