I was thinking the same thing. It would be sweet to have Alembic and bgeo be offloaded to the video card with the Custom Primitive. THe tech is there.
THis would make me so happy. OMG If we could get this for volumes(I guess standard bgeo would take care of this). My life would be so much better.

Its tricky
here is a thread on integrateing strain forces with FLIP, you pretty much have to do the same with sand. I rand some tests and it was too great of results.

Whats really cool about the method pcales mentioned is that you can smooth out the Quat -> matrix values with an attrib blend. So if your pieces are constrained together their edges stick together giving a cloth/metal vibe to them.

Glad I found this thread as well.
Learned a lot. Finally got the sand forces working decently. Just swap it out for the strain forces. Needs a lot of tweaking though. and it seems to explode sometimes.

Damn, I have this same problem, just bought apprentice and its super slow with no icons. I really hope this can be resolved, I'm on win xp quadro fx 3400 and 2 gigs of ram,
I'm going to try and set up a dual boot and try the linux version.
