I don't know if I'm simplyfying things here too much, but at our studio this works with this simple json in each workstation's standard houdini packages dir. No need to do anything with your .env.:

I'm coming across the same issue, and I distinctly recall this not happening in the past. Has something changed since H19.0? Is this a preference that can be set?
Thanks,

Bump... this is still having us scratching our heads. Karma is working fine, Deadline is working fine, everything's working fine. But file output as exr gives empty files when rendering to a mapped network drive.
Technical Discussion » New curve tool in H19 problem with editing bezier curves

Hi CYTE,
it does change the behavior a bit when manipulating from perspective view - not completely snapping to an axis now, but still jumping away from position. When manipulating from side/front/top view, it still snaps.
What seems to work correctly is: Pick mode to View plane, hit 'k' (to see transform handles), then use those to position.
But now another problem arises: I can only select points in front view, the other three don't respond.

Hi CYTE, thanks for confirming.
Added info:
- I tested (and found no difference)with some different geforce drivers; 471.11/472.12/472.84
- camera tied to view or not has no influence
I submitted a bug report too

With the '2D pan & zoom' tickbox enabled in view-mode and zoomed in, the view snaps back to full frame all the time - always when selecting the current camera, sometimes when selecting an object, often when scrubbing the timeline. Does anyone else see this happening?
Tested in H19.0.383 and H19.0.455

Technical Discussion » New curve tool in H19 problem with editing bezier curves

In H19, as soon as I click on a bezier controlpoint (or on the line connecting the point and the handles) it snaps to the axis of whatever viewport I select it in (or in case of the perspective viewport, it snaps to the nearest axis).
Is this a bug or the way it's supposed to work - or am I missing a setting? It makes the new curve tool completely useless!
(To be sure: I don't have any snapping on)
Checked in H19.0.383 and 19.0.455, both python2 and 3 versions

Hi Enivob,
that is already the case. Weirdly enough, I've found out that when rendering to another network drive - a slightly older one - it works.
Our network guy has checked and says both are running SMB as file sharing protocol. (I'm mentioning this as in another thread there is a discussion about usd not being able to write to SMB networks)

As the title says - when I write my output files to my local disk, all's well. When I write them to a network drive, I get empty files. I have this problem only with Karma. Mantra, Arnold and Redshift work fine.
Can anyone repro/confirm?
H19.0.383, Windows10
cheers, Jasper
: I just noticed this doesn't happen when writing out jpgs - but it does when writing exrs.

Technical Discussion » Versioned Digital Asset with external node references
- druitre

When using RMB > Create Digital Asset, there is an option to allow the creation of an asset with references to nodes outside the subnet. 'Do you wish to save anyway? OK'
When using the newer (and much preferred) RMB > Versioned Digital Asset there is no such option, also not in the preferences dialogue.
Is it possible to add this option? I have my materials in /mat, and I need to have them there - it's a pipeline workflow thing. I found out I can work around it by first saving with RMB > Create Digital Asset, and unticking 'check for external node references' in the type properties panel. But that just adds an unneccesary step.
Or is this already a preference I can set and have I not found where it is?

Jasper

Technical Discussion » Vellum Brush

Hi, I'm having this kind of silly question. I'm trying out the new vellum brush, but whatever I do, I can't make it do anything. My brush just doesn't affect the geometry at all. I set up a grid, add the vellum brush node (then what do I need to plug into the constraint geometry input? Itself? A null? nothing works. It would be nice if the docs would show an example setup), hit enter, I see the brush. But it doesn't do anything.
Any help appreciated,
Jasper

Technical Discussion » Background Image sequence realtime

I don't see this working. Whenever I have a background imagesequence (be it exr or jpg), my viewport performance drops to less than 5 fps, however often I let it run. It seems no buffering is happening. Viewport texture use says 5%, Texture Cache Size says 1638 MB. Is there another setting/preference to set this?

I'm also convinced the real-time developments will revolutionize the render business, Houdini seems to be nicely aware of this.
And Marc, I agree, it's a bad thing if a company monitors their forums in such a way. I have not had this experience on RS forums, also I'm under the impression Juanjo (the Houdini developer for RS) has good connections with SideFX. But again, I haven't had your bad experience.

Yeah, long story, but just one person. Hardly representative.
I've been using RS quite literally since day one (meaning back in the XSI days, in early RS alpha stage, only much later adding Houdini) and I would say Redshift as a company has very high standards. They are exceptionally responsive, friendly, open to critique, provide bugfixes at an insane speed as well as continuous release updates. Just my experience, maybe. I have a similar opinion of SideFX, I love their level of support, openness to improvements, speed of bugfixes and updates just as much. In my experience, both are companies that listen to their userbase.
Speed comparison between RS and Mantra? RS as a render engine may have issues we can discuss but it is most certainly faster than Mantra buck for buck (amount of money spent on CPU vs GPU). What is open for discussion is rather on the field of what features are supported and what not, how well RS handles different scenarios, etc. As you would with every other 3rd party renderer.
On the H18 front, it is an uncommon situation. With SideFX breaking HDK each update atm, you can't expect third party renderers to keep up with that. This will iron out in time. Unfair (and not doing yourself a favor) to base your judgement on that.
I would say, congrats on buying Redshift.

It's even more weird:
- one curve selected, everything works.
- two or more curves selected, everything works UP TO +-48 frames. At +-49 frames, it stops working. + it works normally, +- it stops working at 49.
